Bronxville Farmers' Market: Sohha Savory Yogurt, a Very Special Yogurt

May 27, 2015: The Bronxville Farmers' Market (BFM) has three marketers under its belt and all seem to be happy to be back, customers and vendors alike! Orchards of Concklin had the first strawberries this week, so summer can't be far behind! Morgiewicz is back--which is nice to see but it was odd to see them in one lonely tent space. That will change in quick order.
Another vendor who started its business because of a need of a family member is Sohha Savory Yogurt. John and Angela Fout were in the world of academia, Angela a professor, John pursuing his MBA, when their daughter Savana was born four years ago. When Savana was six months old and starting to eat solid foods, they were searching for a suitable store-bought yogurt to give their baby that would contain no chemicals and would not be high in sugar or low in omega-3.
When their search was unsuccessful, Angela decided to whip up her mom's recipe. Angela is from Lebanon and was raised eating the select items you will find at their stall. I have learned how their savory offerings have boundless uses and are all good and good for you.
Their yogurt is made with three ingredients: locally sourced milk, probiotic cultures, and sea salt. That's it! No added sugar, preservatives, or gelatins. There are only four to six grams of sugar per serving, which come from the milk. Their milk is all sourced locally from Hudson Valley Fresh, a group of ten dairy farms in upstate New York, as is their honey.
They offer whole milk and 2%, in original or tangy, in different sized containers. Their business is sustainable, and very little that is used in production is wasted. You can purchase the strained whey at their stall. The process takes 36 hours from beginning to end. All yogurt is made in small batches. It is pasteurized, which is mandated by law, but not above the 200-degree mark, so the probiotics survive the process.
Their journey has been a swift one. Since the entire concept was hatched in June of 2013, New York Magazine has awarded them Best Yogurt in 2014, they have been on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, and they are now in attendance in 15 farmers' markets and have a wholesale business in Brooklyn, which is now expanding.
John, with his business smarts, and Angela, with her boundless energy, creativity, and strong work ethic, have built this simple ma-and-pa business to the max! And I am amazed how they have kept up and always seem to be one step ahead of the curve with their growth. And they do all this while raising a very happy little girl.
Sohha Savory Yogurt is now with the BFM every week. Stop by and sample their yogurt and many other healthy offerings. I'm sure you will be wowed by how good yogurt really is. I know I was. I now use Sohha Yogurt in place of sour cream and mayonnaise in many of my recipes. I avoided yogurt all my life until now. I'm a big fan. And it is also a great paring with Concklin's strawberries.
