Sep. 14, 2016:  The recently opened Bronxville Diner on Kraft Avenue is a trip to the past in terms of its '50s décor, with shakes and malts that are proving most popular with the younger crowd who flock to this new place, mainly during their lunch hour from school.

The Bronxville Diner is conveniently located just a few doors from the movie theater and has great potential. In my view, it needs to find its niche in a village where Pete's (hamburgers) and Lange's (sandwiches) are thriving institutions. Unfortunately, I found the quality of the food in the past few visits to be inconsistent and in some cases disappointing. I have high hopes for this diner and look forward to following its progress in the months ahead. It is an interesting and unique addition to our local dining scene.

It has had instant popularity, and, from what I can tell, has been packed with people wanting to experience the very first diner in Bronxville's history. This colorful 1950s eating establishment pops with turquoise walls decorated with vintage puzzle posters and touches of deep cranberry red chairs and accents. It is part of the Post Road family of diners that includes the Post Road Diner, the New Canaan Diner, and the Darien Diner. The owners also own Lithos, a more upscale restaurant right next door to the Darien Diner.

The three of us were very lucky not to have to wait for a booth for dinner around 7:00 pm on a Thursday night. We were served tap water in cute red Coca-Cola plastic glasses with a piece of lemon. We brought our own wine, and our accommodating waiter, Dimitri, brought us wine glasses and opened the wine for us. This is a nice gesture on their part until they get their liquor license.

We ordered three appetizers to start with: traditional French onion soup, Buffalo chicken fingers served with creamy blue cheese dressing, and Greek-style grilled zucchini served with tzatziki sauce. The onion soup was very good and so were the chicken fingers (one portion is enough for two people). The zucchini was soggy and overdone, but the tzatziki sauce was good. The diner uses plastic white plates decorated with a pattern of black checks around the perimeter of the plates.

Our three entrees were a chicken parmesan grinder with French fries; BBQ meatloaf with bacon, mashed potatoes, and gravy; and a pork souvlaki sandwich with pita, tomato, and lettuce served with a side of tzatziki sauce. The grinder was just OK and was not served on Italian bread, but the problem was the French fries. They had been frozen and then baked, and they were thus chalky and had no flavor whatsoever. I could eat only one, and I hope in the future they will cook homemade fries on the premises. The BBQ meatloaf was good and so were the mashed potatoes and gravy. However, the pork souvlaki sandwich was a bit of a challenge because the pieces of pita bread were cut up in very small pieces. It should have been open-faced on a much larger piece of pita bread. The pork was also overdone and tough.

For dessert, we ordered the caramel shake, one of 15 choices, and it was delicious and quickly downed by all three of us! For breakfast, I have heard that one of the specialties is French toast topped with caramel and bananas. I did take out a boiled ham and cheese sandwich for lunch a week ago and I requested it to have tomato, lettuce, coleslaw, and pickle. It consisted of rolled up pieces of ham and cheese on dry pieces of rye bread with no mayonnaise, tomato, lettuce, or pickle, and coleslaw that was disappointing.

The Bronxville Diner is open seven days a week from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm and appeals to school children, who come here for lunch, and a younger crowd in general. I found the prices to be a little high on certain items. They also have a gluten-friendly menu to choose from. I hope it will attract the movie-goers as well.
