Bronxville Rotary Promotes Childhood Literacy; Ashley Hanrahan to Be Honored at May 9 Community Service Award Dinner

Apr. 22, 2015: On April 13, Janet DeBenedetto, District Rotary Foundation chair, presented the Bronxville Rotary Club with a check for $1,500 to support the club's Reading is Fundamental childhood literacy project at PS 23 in Nodine Hill, Yonkers.
Bronxville Rotarians Doris Benson and David Rosensweig accepted the check on behalf of the club. As the 2012-2013 club president, Rosensweig spearheaded the club's involvement in childhood literacy and Benson drafted the grant proposal.
Rosensweig was struck by the idea of purchasing books for students after observing his neighbors: "That mother reads to her children every day, they always have a book, and I thought every child should have a book to read. It makes a real difference in their lives."
Benson's grant proposal included $1,915 in additional funds contributed by the Bronxville Rotary Club for a total budget of $3,415. These funds were used to purchase books for 450 students in the Yonkers program.
The Bronxville Rotary Foundation supports the efforts of Rotary International "to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision for a better world." The Nodine Hill project is a local educational effort supporting childhood literacy in neighboring Yonkers.
On May 9, the Bronxville Rotary Club will celebrate its annual community service award dinner and auction at Siwanoy Country Club. Presented in collaboration with The Reformed Church of Bronxville, the event will honor Ashley Hanrahan with the Rotary's 2015 Community Service Award.
The Rotary and The Reformed Church have partnered in their efforts to promote literacy at PS 23 in Nodine Hill, and money raised at this event will continue to support this literacy project in Yonkers.

Boulder Ledge Garden Club
Founded in 1966, the Boulder Ledge Garden Club is rooted in a mission to inspire a deeper appreciation and love for gardening and flower arranging. The club is dedicated to fostering and promoting interest and knowledge in gardening.
The Club maintains Bronxville’s Bicentennial Park and other civic gardens. In 2019–2020 the club raised $18,000 to replace trees in the village, reflecting its active role in community beautification. It also holds garden therapy projects and educational garden trips for members.

Bronxville Giving Garden
The Bronxville Giving Garden is a community-centered garden that donates organic produce to Eastchester Community Action Partnership in Tuckahoe and Community Service Associates in Mount Vernon. The garden is also a gathering place where school children and volunteers can discover the joy of tending plants and growing food.

The Bronxville Green Committee is a volunteer organization that is part of the Village of Bronxville. It proposes and implements environmentally sustainable programs in our community.
