Letter to the Community from Eddie Lennon, Candidate for Reelection to Bronxville Board of Education

May 19, 2025

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

As we wind down this Board of Education election cycle, I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to speak with me, read my letters and consider supporting my re-election. As someone who grew up in Bronxville, it has been an honor and privilege to serve as a Bronxville School Board of Education Trustee.

Serving on the BOE for the last three years and having the historical perspective of someone who attended the school K-12, in addition to living in the community for eight years as a parentI want to take five more minutes of your time to share a few thoughts as you weigh your decision on who to vote for in tomorrow’s election.

First and foremost, Id ask that you consider the relevant experience of the incumbent TrusteesPete, Mike and myself and how that translates into a successful team to guide our school into the future. The vast knowledge obtained over the last three years is unique and not similarly replicated in the private sector. This current board has succeeded in working coherently and in a cooperative, thoughtful and stable manner to better the educational experience of all kids, K-12.

The second topic Id like to cover is the importance of balance on the BOE. I have four kids under the age of nine. Trustee Skinner has five under the age of 12. Trustee Kapoor has three kids, two in MS and one in ES. Trustee Kenny has one in MS and two in HS, with a fourth in college. Trustee Coniff has two college age students. Trustee Brandes has one in college and one graduating HS this year. Similarly, Trustee McSherry has two in college and one graduating HS this year.

To put this in perspective, historically, the average BOE Trustee either had older kids in the Bronxville School or college age students. This balance is absolutely crucial on a board that must represent all three of our schools equally. I would argue that the current balance is the healthiest it’s ever been and the best examples of this are our accomplishments and commitments to the Elementary School. The $20 million Capital Project. The recent Smartphone Policy, enacted before it was popular or NYS getting involved. The continued improvements put forward in the literacy curriculum, specifically enhanced Phonics programming and professional development for our ES teachers. There is no lack of attention or resources for the Elementary School and our High School would be very under represented should Pete and Mike not get re-elected. Pete and Mike have the full K-12 experience, including crucial college prep knowledge and to suggest that they are somehow less relevant since they will no longer have kids in the building is foolish and, frankly, quite rude. They are both dedicated and passionate members of the Board who have worked tirelessly over the last three years serving our school.

Lastly, one interesting detail we learned from our nationwide superintendent search, when interviewing a candidate from Connecticut, was that their BOE Trustees and candidates run on political party tickets, with endorsements from those parties and committees, yard signs and allIn her school, BOE Trustees had active restraining orders against one another. Can you imagine!?

This election season marks the first time in over 30 years where incumbent Trustees seeking a second term are being challenged and the first time in the history of the Bronxville School where candidates have run as a politically endorsed slate, in this case, Sepe, Zloto and Kiehner. I think I can speak for the majority of our residents when I say that this is really an unfortunate turn of events and sets a dangerous precedent for the future of our school and community.

There is absolutely no place for politics on the Bronxville Board of Education because our kids are more important than anyones political agenda or beliefs. The school is the crown jewel of the Village and is the foundation of our property values. It is why people move here and we should all aim to keep it that way. Please support the current team and vote for Lennon, McSherry and Brandes.

Thank you for your time and support. It has been such a pleasure getting to know so many of you over the last three years and I look forward to what we can accomplish in the next term. Vote tomorrow, May 20th, in the Blue Gym Meadow Avenue 7AM-9PM.

Sincerely,

Eddie Lennon

Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
