Bronxville Middle School Students Earn Top Honors at Science Olympiad; See Names

By Jean Windels, Science Teacher and Eighth-Grade Science Olympiad Team Leader, Bronxville Middle School

Mar. 9, 2016:  On Saturday, February 27, the Bronxville Middle School Science Olympiad team competed at the regional competition, which took place at Scarsdale Middle School.

The team consisted of 19 students spread over sixth, seventh, and eighth grades and was coached by eighth-grade science teacher Jean Windels with assistance from sixth-grade science teacher Frank Viggiani and Joseph Hutchins, a parent.

The competition had fifteen study events on topics such as human anatomy, meteorology, optics, and ecology, as well as five building events, whose projects were built ahead of time and brought to the competition.

The five building events were (1) cars that carried an egg down a track and stopped before hitting a wall, (2) an air cannon to shoot a ping pong ball to hit various targets, (3) elastic-launched gliders, (4) wooden bridges, and (5) Rube Goldberg projects.

Bronxville won sixth-place of 29 teams, and individual medals were won by Liam Heraty, Ted Conway, and Bethany Lee, as well as Jude Haase-Puissant and Caroline Ircha, who placed first in Scrambler--the egg-carrying car.

It was a great competition that truly celebrated student accomplishments in science in addition to being a lot of fun!
