Bronxville School to Host Second Spring Innovation Expo on May 17

By Michael Ganci, Local Media Editor, Syntax, for The Bronxville School

May 11, 2016:  The Bronxville School will host its second Spring Innovation Expo on May 17 to celebrate the creative spirit across the school community.

The family-school partnership event will feature an art show from all grade levels and a variety of educational and engaging workshops that will be led by students, educators, and guest speakers.

"As a way of exploring and supporting innovation in our classroom, our school, and the community as a whole, we invite students, teachers, and parents to come together on May 17, not only to hear from young people but also to participate in activities designed to get people thinking and solving problems in new ways," said Superintendent Dr. David Quattrone.

The evening will begin with an art show at 5:30 pm, followed by opening remarks at 6:30 pm and two workshop sessions at 6:50 pm and 7:40 pm. There are 21 workshops for students in grades three to twelve. Parents can select according to their interests.

One of the workshops will challenge participants to build a bridge made out of gumdrops and toothpicks that can hold 120 "penny cars," while another workshop will encourage participants to use the principles of physics to create a roller coaster from foam tubes and test its capacity with marbles.

The Marshmallow Tower Challenge workshop will test participants' design and engineering skills as they build the tallest marshmallow-topped tower out of spaghetti, tape, and a string. In other workshops, participants will learn how to code or use a 3-D printer to solve creative challenges and build their own masterpieces.

Other workshops are designed to inspire creativity as participants create their own artwork or family myths. The Build a Robot Drone workshop will demonstrate how students have been collaborating to build a fully autonomous flying robot drone, while through the radioactive workshop, participants will hear from a student who built an electrostatic device and then took on the responsibility to find an area of the school with the highest radiation level.

"Through this family-school partnership, we hope to explore and support the innovative spirit across the school community," Dr. Quattrone said.
