Bronxville High School Chorus Students Go Behind Scenes at Metropolitan Opera House

Feb. 8, 2017:  Eighteen Bronxville High School chorus students, accompanied by choral director Pamela Simpson, drama teacher Peter Royal, and parent volunteers, toured the Metropolitan Opera House backstage and saw the production of Carmen on January 27.

"Seeing everything that goes into creating a production from behind the scenes was an eye-opener for all of us," said Simpson, who added that the students got an exclusive look at the backstage area, costume rooms, and main theater. "Everything is made in-house for every production, including all the costumes, wigs, shoes, scenery, sets, and props."

Metropolitan Opera Guild members, who served as guides to the group, discussed the history of the opera house, which opened in 1966 in its present location, and shared anecdotes about different performances.

"Nearly everyone was working while we were there, and we heard singers rehearsing as we walked through the hallways," Simpson said. "Most of our students hadn't experienced a live opera, and when they expressed interest, I wanted to make it happen for them."
