Friends of Bronxville Library to Virtually Host Authors Barbara Demick and Fiona Davis in September

Aug. 5, 2020: The Friends of the Bronxville Public Library will host two virtual author events via Zoom on Wednesday, Sept. 16 and Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m.
On Wednesday, Sept. 16, Barbara Demick will discuss her new book, "Eat the Buddha: Life and Death in a Tibetan Town." A National Book Award finalist for "Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea," Demick's latest book was recently featured in a New York Times list of "Ten New Books We Recommend This Week" (July 23), which described it as "the profile of a group of Tibetans with roots in Ngaba County, in the Chinese province of Sichuan, which bears the gory distinction of being the undisputed world capital of self-immolations."
Parul Sehgal calls the book "masterly," and says that it "covers an awe-inspiring breadth of history," from the heyday of the Tibetan empire to the present day." Bronxville's Zahabia Brainch will moderate the discussion. Register here, and you will be sent the Zoom link on the day of the event.
On Wednesday, Sept. 30, best-selling author Fiona Davis will discuss her new book, "The Lions of Fifth Avenue," which was recently reviewed for BookTrib by Claudia Keenan, author of a history of the Bronxville School: "In the world's fastest growing city, where well over a dozen daily newspapers were read by more than five million people, the year 1914 burst forth with the Great War and battles over modernism and women's rights.
While immigrants lived in stifling squalor on the Lower East Side, the lingering Gilded Age millionaires and new industrialists dispensed extraordinary philanthropy. Two of the institutions they created — the New York Public Library and the Columbia Journalism School — play important roles in Fiona Davis's new novel, "The Lions of Fifth Avenue" (Dutton)."
A precursor to the event is a virtual tour of the New York Public Library on Aug. 10, led by Bronxville's Joan Marlow Golan.
"The Lions of Fifth Avenue" was recently featured in the New York Post as a Best Book of the Week (July 18) and Publisher's Weekly gave it a starred review: "The characters and story are stellar, but the real star of the show is the library, which Davis evokes beautifully." The Bronxville Public Library traces its origins back to 1875, when it was a small lending library housed in a room attached to the “Bronxville Model School.” The Library was officially chartered in 1906 and moved into the Village Hall Building. The needs of the library grew with the town and, in 1942, a new standalone building was erected, which is where the Library is today. Over the years, the Library was renovated and expanded to meet the needs of the community.
The Library has wonderful resources for adults and children and offers a comfortable and relaxing environment. The Library also houses a fine art collection, consisting principally of Bronxville painters and sculptors.
The Library offers special events, art exhibitions, and programs for adults, young adults and children. All events are open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
