Bronxville Police Institute Sobriety Checkpoints Thanksgiving Eve

Dec. 4, 2013: On Thanksgiving Eve, the Village of Bronxville Police Department concentrated patrol operations on drunken driving enforcement. Sobriety checkpoints resulted in two DWI arrests and one arrest for unlawful possession of marijuana. The three items below are derived from the Bronxville police blotter.

Wednesday, Nov. 27:  On Pondfield Road at 9:03 pm a 21-year-old* resident of Briarcliff was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana after police officer Steve Valentin detected a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle as the resident drove up to a police checkpoint. A small plastic bag containing marijuana was subsequently recovered from the driver's side door panel. The 2000 Volkswagen Passat, owned by the driver's mother, was impounded at the scene. The driver was released on his own recognizance and ordered to appear before the Village of Bronxville court on Wednesday, December 18, 2013.

Wednesday, Nov. 27:  At 9:05 pm 27-year-old James Fox of Pleasantville was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after registering a blood alcohol content of .09%, which is greater than the legal limit of .08%. Fox's 2013 Volkswagen Golf was impounded at the scene. Fox was processed by arresting officer Michael Lewis, then released on his own recognizance and ordered to appear before the Village of Bronxville court on Wednesday, December 18, 2013.

Wednesday, Nov. 27:  At 11:30 pm on White Plains Road 61-year-old John Keefe of Tuckahoe was arrested and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated (a class E felony) after registering a blood alcohol content of .19%, which is more than double the legal limit of .08%. The 2008 SAAB 93B was released to Keefe's mother (the registered owner) at the scene. Keefe was processed by arresting officer Steve Valentin, then arraigned by Judge George Mayer. Judge Mayer released Keefe on $500.00 cash bail and ordered him to appear before the Village of Bronxville court on Wednesday, December 18, 2013.

Bronxville Chief of Police Christopher Satriale stated, "With one-third of all fatalities on the highways involving impairment due to alcohol and drugs, we must continue to aggressively enforce driving-while-intoxicated offenses in order to prevent the devastating consequences of this crime. We are grateful for the support received from the Westchester County Stop DWI Program, which provides the necessary funding to facilitate this important initiative."

Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
