Parkway Road Bridge Contract to Be Awarded in March; Work to Be Completed by May 1

Feb. 11, 2015: Bronxville Village Administrator Jim Palmer reports that structural repairs on the Parkway Road bridge, which has been closed to vehicular traffic since July of 2013, will be substantially completed by May 1.
Plans will be available to contractors wishing to bid on the job beginning February 13. The village will open bids on March 4 and expects to award the repair contract at the March 9 board of trustees meeting.
Palmer anticipates work will begin during the week of March 16.
Questions and disagreements about which municipality should bear the cost of repairing the bridge, half of which sits in the Village of Bronxville and, therefore, the Town of Eastchester, and half of which sits in the City of Yonkers, delayed repair plans and left the bridge closed to traffic for over a year.
The village entered into intermunicipal agreements with the Town of Eastchester and the City of Yonkers to help fund repairs. According to Mayor Mary Marvin, all monies have been collected or allocated in accordance with those agreements.
The City of Yonkers has contributed $30,000; the Town of Eastchester has contributed $50,000; and the Village of Bronxville has earmarked $50,000.
The village received notification from the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) in 2011 that the two-span bridge had experienced structural deterioration significant enough to warrant closure if not addressed. The State of New York built the bridge in 1952.
During a routine biennial inspection in May of 2013, NYSDOT found severe steel corrosion in four of the six girders in the bridge's first span, as well as holes in sections of the girders directly over the pier supporting the span. Inspectors also noted 25 to 50 percent losses in the steel at the ends of the girder beams. While similar conditions were found in the bridge's second span, it had not suffered the same degree of deterioration as the first span.
All conditions noted by NYSDOT will be repaired, as will the bridge's deck joint over the piers.
