Nov. 27, 2019: The Community Fund of Bronxville, Eastchester, and Tuckahoe held its second youth basketball tournament on Oct. 20 at the Main Street Courts in Tuckahoe.

This event was created to celebrate the Community Fund’s role in refurbishing the basketball courts and has grown into a popular tradition that brings families together across all three towns to enjoy some friendly basketball and this revitalized community recreational space.

Tournament participation doubled since last year, with 130 players across the 6th/7th-grade and 8th/9th-grade brackets. The teams included a mix of boys and girls teams from Bronxville, Eastchester, and Tuckahoe.

Maxwell Pearce, Tuckahoe native, celebrity dunker and a new member of the Harlem Globetrotters, came to show his support and spoke to the crowd. He talked about how much the Main Street courts meant to him growing up and his appreciation for The Community Fund’s role in helping to renovate and bring new energy back to this important community asset.

Although late afternoon rain caused the 8/9th games to be postponed until Sunday Oct. 27, the tournament finished up in an exciting finale packed with families in the St. Joseph’s school gym.

Below are the winning teams: 

The 6th / 7th Grade Boys Event was won by Team Ankle Breakers (Eastchester) that included Joseph Deljovic, GianLuca Rizzo, Jackson Shepelsky, and Peter Telesco.

The Girls Division Event ended in a tie between Team Three C and E (St. Joseph School) and Team Blue Devils (Bronxville). Team C and E included Caitlyn Carey, Colleen Carey, Emily Enke, and Caroline Nowak  Team Blue Devils included Hope Hershberg, Kayla Rugova, Isabella Fenner, and Savanna Delli Colli

The 8th/9th Grade Boys Event was won by Team Broccoli from Bronxville. This team included Ted Heraty, Owen Atkeson, and Finn Sands.

This event really captures our mission of supporting and connecting our residents across the three towns and making sure that we are helping to fund health and wellness initiatives that keep members of all ages active and engaged in our wonderful community. A big thank you to Dave Scalzo, Donna Ruhanen, and the other volunteers that gave their time and effort into creating such a fantastic event.”

For 100 years, The Community Fund has been supporting agencies and community programs which provide services to residents of the Bronxville 10708, Eastchester and Tuckahoe (BET) area, including: 

• Family initiatives, including cancer support groups, bereavement counseling, and drug and alcohol and counseling services. 

• Senior living assistance, including escorts for transportation, housecleaning services, shopping assistance, and recreational programs. 

• Youth support, including after school programs, teen scene activities, summer enrichment programs, and drug and substance abuse education in BET schools. 

• Healthcare funding including the free flu shots in partnership with NY Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital, and the purchase of state of the art ambulances for Eastchester Volunteer Ambulance Corps (EVAC), the primary ambulance provider in our area.
