Bronxville High School Winter Sports Awards 2021

By S. Quinn DeJoy and J.  Murrer

Apr. 21, 2021: Athletic Council Presidents Kaitlin McBride and Connor Randall hosted the annual winter sports awards introducing the winter athletes and their coaches. It was a live event that was videotaped in the high school auditorium and can be seen on the Bronxville YouTube Channel here.

Athletic Director Joe Haven congratulated the athletes for their efforts and noted that the awards format was changed this year to be more athlete focused. Each team captain spoke and introduced athletes and commented on their respective seasons. Senior ice hockey player and captain Kyle Dillon spoke about his experience on the team.

“Playing with these guys has been the time of my life,” said Dillon. “Getting to go out and beat Mamaroneck in the Section Final was probably the best way to end it. I love playing with this team, and I am going to miss it.”

The ice hockey team won the Southern Westchester Section 1 Championship in a four-and-a-half-week season with an 11-2 record. Ice hockey is a merged team with Eastchester and Tuckahoe, and the logistics during the pandemic lead to great uncertainty as to whether the season would take place.

“We didn’t know if we would have hockey at all this year,” said Coach Steve Forzaglia. “We are very glad it happened. A lot goes into it with a normal merger, but when you add the Covid part to it, it takes it up another level.”

The pandemic had an impact on all sports, and indoor track had to get very creative.

“On the first day we found out that The Armory had been converted to a vaccine center so we were scrambling,” said girls’ track coach David Ryan. “Section 1 decided we were going to have outdoor track meets but snow covered the track for five or six weeks and made competing very difficult. People in the community probably saw us training. We were training on streets all over the place and wherever we could find a place that wasn’t icy.”

Skiing had challenges of its own. The home mountain is in New Jersey, but because of the pandemic, the Bronxville team could not cross state lines. All three ski leagues in Section 1 had to train and compete at Thunder Ridge in Brewster. Even eating after ski meets became a challenge during Covid. The team stopped at the Red Rooster in Brewster and ate outside in the middle of the winter, which included indulging in ice cream sundaes.

While most of teams were able to compete in a regional playoff, it was disappointing that the athletes could not compete at the sectional, state or national level.

“It was a tough season, and we have a very talented team,” said Coach Ryan.  “We have All-League, All-Conference, All-Section and All-State athletes, and they weren’t able to show what they could do. I am very saddened by that but they were great through the season.”
