Part 2

Mar. 18, 2020: To recap, I've been on a fabulous cruise between Singapore and Mumbai, all with the spread of Coronavirus looming.

Our next stop is to be Yangon (the old Rangoon), where we are to have three days to explore at leisure.

I plan to stay for a night at Belmond's Governor's Residence, a lovely and stylish hotel not far from my favorite place nearby, the Shwedagon Pagoda, an immense temple lit up in all its books and crannies by Las Vegas-style, slot-machine-like flashing colored lights.

But it was not to be!

Our charming Italian captain came on the loudspeaker to announce, as we learned to dread later, that Myanmar had closed its ports to cruise ships.

Instead, we were rerouting to make several stops in Malaysia. Well, ok, that's sad, but thus the cookie crumbles.

Our first stop was Penang. I hesitantly signed up for a tour.

After passing endless and relatively charmless tall condominiums, our first stop was at the "famed" Snake Temple. There, supposedly devenomed, smallish snakes guard the altar. We walked by them, quite quickly, checked the floor for any errant reptile.

As we walked farther, we were given the chance to have our picture taken with a boa constructor. As I had left my phone on the ship in my excitement to go on the excursion, I determined that I must have such an image so that people would believe that I had actually been there.

Waiting for the rest of the group to pass by without partaking, I snuck over and whispered that I would like said memento.

A huge, overly friendly boa was wrapped around me, attempting to move his jaws near my face. In a controlled but tremulous voice, I told the photographer to take the picture as fast as he damn well could.

Then, in an unexpected moment of creative zeal, one of the guys attempted to put one of the nasty, temple-guarding atop my head. Sometimes a girl just has to say, "No," and this was one of them.

I then repaired to the bus, uncrushed, unpoisoned, and in possession of my sacred proof of life.

Our next stop was a batik factory. Let me warn you, if you don't know already, the word "factory" on a land tour can mean terrible things.

I've been suckered into rug factories, wholesale jewelry factories, even a papyrus factory. The merchandise is usually execrable. Additionally, there's always one person on the bus who wants to buy something for each of her (always "her"- the men are smart enough to stay on the bus) 27 friends and relatives while everyone waits.

And, ok, I did buy ONE thing, an enormous caftan, which I will be buried in. However, if I see any more batik, I may have a panic attack.

Encumbered with my treasures, we returned to the boat and set sail, figuratively, for Poet Klang, the dock nearest to Kuala Lumpur.

And, believe me, this was only the beginning of the saga.
