Christ Church Has Food Drive on Palm Sunday

By Kevin Cook, member, Christ Church Bronxville

Apr. 8, 2020:  More than 50 community members brought bags of cereal, canned vegetables, and pasta to Christ Church Bronxville on Palm Sunday, April 5, afternoon.

Volunteers from the parish, sporting Live Generously tee-shirts from Thrivent Financial, helped receive the filled bags and boxes for distribution at St. James Church in the Fordham neighborhood of the Bronx this week.

Christ Church collects food items for the St. James Food Pantry on the first Sunday of every month.

Rev. Michael Bird, rector of Christ Church, said: “Our calling as Christians is to care for all of God’s people, and some of His people are hungry. And so we will help feed them.”

Villager Andrew Gibbon summed it up nicely as he delivered several large bags of groceries: “We all have so much to share.”

That sentiment was echoed throughout the afternoon. One nearby neighbor brought a bag of food and asked about helping the project financially and wrote a check to St. James Church for $1000.00!

Jody Maier of Christ Church, who chairs this monthly effort, was delighted with the response. “People are always seeking ways to give, and today’s effort brought out the best in everyone!”

The Palm Sunday collection was enhanced with a generous grant from Thrivent Financial, a Fortune 500 non-profit financial services organization based in the Midwest, the mission of which is to help its members be wise with money and live generously to strengthen their families and communities.
