Have You Noticed the Bronxville Giving Garden?

May 22, 2024: Have you noticed the "Bronxville Giving Garden" next to Bronxville Village Hall and wondered what it was?

The Bronxville Green Committee and its chairman, Mary Liz Mulligan, conceived the idea for the Giving Garden in 2016. It yielded its first crop in 2017.   

The Garden was created to meet a need for fresh produce for neighbors in Tuckahoe and Mount Vernon. The food pantries in these areas do a great job, but they have to have products that can stay on the shelf, so they often don't stock fresh produce. 

The concept for the Garden was to give everything away, hence the name "The Giving Garden." The crop from the Garden goes to the Eastchester Community Action Program (ECAP) in Tuckahoe, which serves local residents in need, including students, seniors, individuals, and families. 

The Bronxville Giving Garden has grown from a very small operation to harvesting between 350 and 400 pounds of fresh vegetables each season, including tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, and many different kinds of lettuce. It also has an herb garden. The herbs are used to flavor soups, stews, and salads. 

Dave Phillips, a local resident and Broadway musician, tends to the Garden. Boys Scouts also help out. The Garden is also used as a learning tool for nursery school groups.

The Garden was launched with financial support from the Bronxville Rotary Club, and private donations now support it.
