May 3, 2023: The Working Gardeners of Bronxville is the oldest of the gardening organizations in Bronxville. It was founded in 1925 by well-known author and acclaimed gardener and horticulturist Louise Beebe Wilder. Their important mission is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening.
They meet once a month from Fall to Spring to hear speakers on various gardening topics. The membership of approximately 25 garden enthusiasts pay annual dues.
In their April meeting entitled "Not Your Grandmother's Roses," they learned all about roses. Other recent topics include "Groundcover: Sustainable Living Mulch, "Our Responsibility for the Environment," and "Appropriate Vines: Selection and Use." There was also a demonstration on "Pruning Shrubs.
A notable endeavor in the Fall of 2019, was the Snow Crocus Bulb Project. The Club purchased Snow Crocus bulbs, bagged them with planting instructions and gave them to the Bronxville Library. A few Working Gardener members attended the children’s “Storycraft” at the library, and explained to them how to plant the bulbs at home.
In 2021, Working Gardeners planted an American Elm Tree on the property of the Bronxville Village Hall. The tree is dedicated to the memory of a longtime beloved member, Anna Longobardo.
Every Spring, Working Gardeners takes a field trip and this year the group will go on a tour of the Bronx River. Past field trips include Stonecrop Gardens in Cold Spring, Untermyer Gardens in Yonkers, and Manitoga/The Russel Wright Design Center in Philipstown.
The Working Gardeners of Bronxville has five officers and a Membership, Nominating, Hospitality, and Program Committee.
