Letter to the Community from Eddie Lennon, Candidate for Reelection to the Bronxville School Board

April 29, 2025

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

I hope you and your kids are all well and enjoying Spring at The Bronxville School. It is great to see the fields bustling with our athletes, the auditoriums humming with our musicians and the hallways decorated with the artwork of our young artists, all the result of their hard work and dedication. We have so much to be proud of.

For those of you who don’t know me, I was born and raised in the village and attended the Bronxville School, K-12. My wife Lauren and I moved back in 2018 to raise our family here, primarily due to the school and I know many of you have done the same. We have four children, Hunter (3rd grade), Parker (1st grade), Ford (RCNS 3’s) and newborn baby, Grant.
I was elected to the Board of Education in 2022 and have been honored to work on behalf of you and your children.

Professionally, I own and run an 91-year-old family business specializing in architectural and industrial coatings, with a major focus on medium-large facilities. I have significant experience in building / facility maintenance and construction project consulting.

Three years ago, I asked for your support in electing me as a Trustee. Over that time, I have been fortunate to learn so much about how the school operates and am abundantly impressed by the diligence and integrity of our administrators, teachers, maintenance crew, nurses, psychologists, counselors and staff. Believe me when I tell you, these folks make up an incredible infrastructure to support, educate, coach and mentor our young learners.

As a Trustee, I get a first hand look at how the sausage gets made and it is an extraordinarily complicated process. With a 2025 / 2026 budget of over $55,000,000.00, over 300 employees and more moving parts and intricacies than a medium size corporation, there is absolutely nothing more important than on-the-job experience. There are plenty of career paths that can prepare you for this position, but none of them can replace what three years of sitting in that chair teaches you. The learning curve is steep and the hours are long. We work at night and on the weekends. And at the same time, it is a lot of fun!

In my time on the Board, I have been the liaison to the PTA and the liaison to the Bronxville School Foundation. I have actively participated on the Negotiations Committee, the Strategy & Curriculum Committee (2yrs), the Health & Safety Committee, the Professional Development Committee and the Facilities Committee (3yrs). I have been the Chair of the Facilities Committee for the last two years.

This Board has accomplished many things that directly benefit your kids and while there are too many to list here, I would like to highlight a few that I am especially proud of. Some are big and some may seem small but are just as important to the kids and families they affect. In no particular order:

-Hiring Dr. Rachel Kelly The first order of business after being elected was to commence a nationwide search for a new superintendent. The journey lasted nearly a year and took us from Long Island to Connecticut to Ohio and back to Bronxville where we gratefully landed on our very own Dr Rachel Kelly.

-Smartphones – Social Media is a significant factor in our children’s mental health and your kids spend more time at school / practice than when they are awake with you on a weekday. In thoughtful coordination with the administration, we have prohibited any devices that can connect to social media in the elementary school. In middle school, we now require students to park their devices in lockers when they arrive in the morning. In high school, we require students to keep phones in their bags or lockers. The High School is exploring ways to improve current protocols and is considering further implementation this fall. The Bronxville School was and remains a leader on this important health topic.

-Curriculum Two years ago, I became concerned about a gap in our K-2 literacy curriculum, specifically wondering if our phonics instruction was strong enough.. Bronxville had been relying
primarily on the Teachers College Reading & Writing curriculum, which serves us well, but lacks direct instruction in phonics. While we were supplementing, the question arose if it was enough. With the Board’s support, the educators reviewed our current practice which resulted in teachers in the primary grades receiving training in a phonics based curriculum. In addition to our literacy coach, last year we added a math coach who is on hand to assist teachers with the latest methods of educational instruction as it pertains to mathematics, including a review of our prior math curriculum and the implementation of our new math curriculum, Eureka Squared, K-8. We are also in the process of reviewing our grammar instruction, district wide.

-Mental Health / Guidance Counseling As one of the highest performing districts in the nation, our kids are stressed and anxious and this is not unique to Bronxville. The school does an exceptional job focusing on the mental health and counseling needs of our students. In the last three years, we’ve hired an additional counselor for grades 5 and 9 and an additional school psychologist for grades K-12. We now have five psychologists and seven guidance counselors in the building.

-Facilities / Finance - Capital Project Bond Referendum - The Board and Leadership Team has spent two years researching, planning and finalizing our next large scale construction project. As many of you know, it takes a lot of effort to maintain an old house and the school is no different. The Facilities and Finance Committees have worked closely with our architectural / engineering consultants to plan this project, which focuses heavily on the Elementary School. The total cost of the project is $20,000,000.00, which will be offset by $5,000,000.00 that we’ve saved in our capital reserve fund. This project won’t break ground until 2026-2027 and requires the institutional knowledge of the Board members. For more information on the project, please use this link - 2025 Bond Referendum Video.

One of my favorite aspects of this job is getting to know and working with parents on projects that are important to them and their kids. Every parent deserves the right to be heard and I am a firm believer of open lines of communication and transparency. People who know me know they can reach out if something needs attention, regardless of the size or scope of the issue and regardless of whether or not you voted for me. I have had the privilege to work closely with the leadership team and parents in preserving Latin as a language offering, keeping foreign service trips open to students, even if not school sponsored, getting a section added in 2nd grade when class sizes were getting too big and renovating the landscaping in front of the school, including widening the sidewalk on Pondfield Road to make it safer.

While we’ve accomplished much in the last three years, we have a lot of work that we are in the middle of that still needs to get done and I want to be a part of finishing what we’ve started. The Board has been working extremely well together and the next three years will require unity, perseverance and as always, common sense.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and consider my qualifications. And thank you to my fellow Board of Education Trustees for all their dedication to the school. It has been an honor and pleasure working with you all.

The election is on May 20th in the Blue Gym and I would really appreciate your vote.

Sincerely,
Eddie Lennon

Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
