Apr. 28, 2021: The Maxwell Institute of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center, a leading provider of outpatient addiction treatment and prevention education services, is pleased to announce an important new virtual overdose prevention training program. The free program, co-sponsored by Drug Crisis in Our Backyard, is presented via Zoom and open to the general public.
The program, which officially began April 15, is being offered on the third Thursday of every month at 6:30 pm. Participation is limited to 25 people. Register for Zoom ID invitation by emailing to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Participants who complete the training will receive free of charge in the mail a Naloxone kit. Naloxone is a prescription medicine that reverses an overdose by blocking heroin or other opioids in the nervous system for 30-90 minutes. It is administered by injection or intranasal.
“Drug addiction in our communities has reached a crisis level during the pandemic. This program is designed to provide life-saving information on dealing with a drug overdose. Drug addiction is rampant, not just in our urban areas but in our affluent suburban villages and town,” said Lillian Neuman, CASAC, Director of Outreach and Prevention Education for the Maxwell Institute.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the nation “is in the midst of an unprecedented opioid epidemic.” More than 500,000 people have died from drug overdoses since 2000 — nearly ninety-one people a day in the United States.
