Nov. 5, 2014: On Tuesday, October 21, Eastchester fire commissioners adopted the 2015 Eastchester Fire District budget totaling $17,266,840. The Eastchester Fire District includes the villages of Bronxville and Tuckahoe and the town of Eastchester (town outside).
Town law does not require the public to vote on the fire district budget. The public would only vote if a bond referendum were on the ballot.
In adopting the budget, the tax cap was not exceeded and, in fact, there was a ¾ of 1% reduction in the district's tax levy compared to the levy in 2014. For the overall budget, there was a reduction of 1.39% ($242,547), compared to the 2014 budget.
Below is other information about the 2015 budget:
• All firefighter positions have been filled and funded. (One probational firefighter resigned.)
• All other positions funded in 2014 are funded in the 2015 budget.
• There was a 5% increase in premiums for medical/hospital insurance.
• Funds for an engineering review of the district's firehouses were placed in the 2015 budget for the purpose of setting up a capital plan to renovate/upgrade these locations.
• A 13% reduction of overtime for 2015 resulted from the hiring of nine new firefighters in 2014.
• There was a 7% reduction in the district's contribution for retirement benefits.
• The district realizes a large savings for each new firefighter who was hired to replace a retiring top pay firefighter.
The Eastchester Fire District election will take place on Tuesday, December 9. Citizens voting in Bronxville will vote at the Bronxville fire station.
As of today, only one candidate has submitted a petition to be on the ballot. Candidates have until November 19 to turn in a petition. A copy of the petition can be found on the fire district's website at:

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.
While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.
Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.
The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
