Bronxville Goes Republican in Recent November Elections

Written by Carol P. Bartold

Nov. 19, 2014: In an election marked by across-the-board victories for Democratic candidates at state and local levels, the closest and most surprising race was in the 37th Senate District between incumbent George Latimer and Republican challenger Joe Dillon, a first-time candidate.

Although Latimer retained his State Senate seat with 36,622 votes to Dillon's 33,489 according to the unofficial count by the Westchester County Board of Elections, a margin of 3,133 votes, Bronxville voters turned out to give Dillon their resounding support, with 1,085 votes (64 percent) to Latimer's 600 (36 percent).

Bronxville voters consistently supported Republican candidates in other contested elections, casting 60 percent of their votes for Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino in his first gubernatorial contest. The unofficial tally for the village's seven voting districts shows Astorino garnering 1,019 votes to incumbent Democrat Andrew Cuomo's 624. Westchester County supported Cuomo with 118,237 votes to Astorino's 88,973.

Other Republicans scored decisive endorsements in Bronxville with attorney general candidate John Cahill receiving 1,104 votes (61 percent) over Democratic incumbent Eric Schneiderman's 626 (37 percent). Schneiderman won Westchester County with 122,660 votes, while Cahill received 81,050.

Republican Robert Antonacci gained 993 votes, or 60 percent of total Bronxville votes cast, while Thomas DiNapoli, Democrat, gained 632 votes, or 38 percent. County voters supported DiNapoli with 125,327 votes to Antonacci's 77,315

The margin of victory in Bronxville held for the 9th Judicial District contest between Democrat James Hubert and Republican Montgomery Delaney. Although Hubert carried Westchester County with 112,646 votes over Delaney's 85,608, Delaney carried Bronxville with 1,018, 62 percent of votes, to Hubert's 617, 38 percent of votes.

Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
