Oct. 10, 2018:  On Friday, September 28, students in The Chapel School’s preschool were treated to a visit from Sam the Naturalist from Nature of Things, a family-based animal and nature educational program based in Westchester. During the visit, the students enjoyed the crisp autumn air on the great porch of the school and learned all about apples and the cider-making process. Students each took turns rotating the press to make fresh cider and observing the apples being crushed from above.

“Wow, that is so cool,” commented one student. “This tastes delicious,” said another, when given the chance to sample the “fruits” of their labor. The students also learned about the different types of apples and sang an apple cider song. “The different colors let you know if it is sweet or sour,” said one enthusiastic child.

When asked about the experience, Mrs. Tween, director of early childhood education at The Chapel School, commented, “It was fantastic! He talked about the color of the apples indicating whether they were sweet (red) or sour (yellow) or both, the science of the oxidization of the apple and that's why the apple turns brown if you cut it and leave it out and that is why the cider is brown. A perfect fall day activity on the great porch!”
