OSilas Gallery at Concordia College to Celebrate 350th Anniversary of Eastchester at Exhibition Starting September 4

Aug. 13, 2014:  The OSilas Gallery at Concordia College will host an exhibition, Legacies, Landmarks & Achievements: Celebrating 350 Years – Eastchester, Tuckahoe, Bronxville, starting September 4.

The exhibition, which is curated by Eastchester resident and historian Mike Fix, will have an opening reception on Thursday, September 4, at 7:00 pm.

The exhibition allows visitors to immerse themselves in local history and discover the many individuals and industries that left their legacies here. Over 30 local historical figures from the past 350 years will be highlighted through photos, paintings, personal artifacts, and biographical stories.

Included in the exhibition is a section entitled "Tuckahoe Marble Legacies and Landmarks" that will focus on 19th-century personalities who led the development of the marble industry in Eastchester and the legacy marble buildings, monuments, and works of art that stand today in Eastchester, New York, and cities traversing the Atlantic Coast.

Current color photographs of surviving buildings and monuments by local photographer Larry Lee are contrasted with age-old lithographs, drawings, and photographs of those same subjects. Featured will be a bust of John Marshall, on loan from the Boston Athenæum, carved by artist John Frazee out of marble from these very quarries.

Gallery hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, noon to 5 pm; Thursday, noon to 7 pm; Saturday & Sunday: 2 to 5pm. Local groups and schools are always welcome. To arrange a group visit, please call 914-337-9300, ext. 2262.

Bronxville Public Library

Bronxville Public Library

The Bronxville Public Library traces its origins back to 1875, when it was a small lending library housed in a room attached to the “Bronxville Model School.” The Library was officially chartered in 1906 and moved into the Village Hall Building. The needs of the library grew with the town and, in 1942, a new standalone building was erected, which is where the Library is today. Over the years, the Library was renovated and expanded to meet the needs of the community.

The Library has wonderful resources for adults and children and offers a comfortable and relaxing environment. The Library also houses a fine art collection, consisting principally of Bronxville painters and sculptors.

The Library offers special events, art exhibitions, and programs for adults, young adults and children.  All events are open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
