Mar. 11, 2015: Last week, several Bronxville athletes headed to the New York State Championships in Ithaca, New York, to compete against the best in the state. Representing Bronxville were six girls from the indoor track and field team and two boys from the swim team.
Sophomore Kaitlin Ryan had a strong second-place finish in the 1000m run (2:55.29) in a race that included schools of all sizes.
"Indoor state is just one big show with no allowance for school size," commented coach Jim Mitchell. "Kaitlin had a great race and a great season."
Ryan's indoor season included a Westchester County Championship in the 1500m and a second-place finish in the 1500m at sectionals.
Ryan, along with her teammates Delia Hayes, Caroline Kirby, and Laura Holland, also competed in the 4x800m relay. At the state qualifiers, they ran a 9:16.71, giving them the top seed, but at states they had a disappointing fourth-place finish with a time of 9:30.35.
Also competing at the state championships was senior Vivian Mroz, who is the first Bronxville girl ever to qualify for states in the pole vault. Mroz vaulted 9-00 for a twenty-second-place finish.
The New York State Swimming and Diving Championships were held at Ithaca College on February 27 and 28. The New Rochelle/Bronxville boys' swim team qualified in multiple events.
Two swimmers competed as individuals, David Stewart from New Rochelle (NR) and Andrew Babyak from Bronxville (BR). Stewart placed second in the 100 fly with a time of 49.25 and ninth in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.85. Babyak placed sixth in the 500 free with a time of 4:40.68 and seventeenth in the 200 free with a time of 1:46.30.
The team also sent two relays to the state competition. The 200 free relay team of Stewart, Babyak, John Freeman (NR), and Michael Lawson (NR) placed eighteenth with a time of 1:29.48. The 400 free relay team of Stewart, Babyak, Aidan Flannery (BR), and Freeman placed fourteenth with a time of 3:16.88.
