Three Bronco Football Players Earn All-State Honors; See List of All-State Players from 1968-2024

Jan. 22, 2025: This past week was all about football. With four NFL Divisional Championship games held on Saturday and Sunday and the College Football National Championship on Monday, there were plenty of opportunities to watch and read about great football games. Bronxville football was also in the news this week with three Broncos named to the New York State Sportswriters’ Association All-State teams.
For the second year in a row, Matthew McSherry was named to the first team in Class B. McSherry, who played both offensive and defensive line for the 8-1 Broncos, was also honored as Section 1’s Class B Offensive Player of the Year and Offensive Lineman of the Year.
Also named to the 2024 All-State list were Davis Patterson and Danny Kelty. It was the second All-State award for Patterson who was named to the 2nd team offense last year and the 5th team offense this year. He was All-League, All-Section, and Section 1 Class B Offensive Back of the Year. Kelty was an All-State honorable mention selection along with being recognized as All-League and All-Section.
Over the years, the Broncos have played in Class D, Class C, and more recently have moved back and forth between C and B depending on the school enrollment. In 2010, Bronxville won the Class C New York State Championship, and eight Broncos made the All-State list. The team also had a good run in the late nineties and finished 2nd in Class D in 1997.
Two Bronxville football players have been part of D1 programs that competed for the National Championship. Henry Donohue, Class of 2021, was a walk-on at Michigan and played on special teams earning two varsity letters. Michigan won the National Championship in 2024 with a 34-13 win over Washington. Carl Vergari, Class of 2005, walked on at Texas joining the team as a sophomore. He was on the roster when Texas lost to Alabama in the National Championship in 2010.
The New York State Sportswriters Association has records of All-State players back to 1968 when Bob Linder, Class of 1969, was named All-State, All-American and earned a full scholarship to play at the University of Rhode Island. Linder, who passed away in September, exceled at Rhode Island and was an All-Yankee Conference player.
