May 29, 2024: Bronxville High School varsity teams entered the playoffs last week with terrific results. Both the boys’ and girls’ outdoor track and field teams and the tennis team won their respective Sectional Championships. The track and field teams will compete at the State Qualifiers on Saturday, and the boys’ tennis team will compete in the quarterfinals of the New York State Championship on May 30th.
Outdoor Track and Field
It has been a spectacular year for Bronxville runners and field athletes who for the first time in Bronxville history won Sectional Championships in cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field.
“I'm just in awe of what the kids have accomplished both this spring season and the entire year,” said Coach Brian Halling. “The kids show up every day and work really hard. Any time you can do something that has never been done before in a place like Bronxville, it makes it extra special.”
The Broncos will compete this weekend at the State Qualifiers, but some of the team members already have qualifying times for States including the boys’ and girls’ 4x400m relay teams. At the Westchester County Championships, Davis Patterson, Javier Tomala-Reidel, Liam Greenfield, and Tommy Henningson qualified with a 3:26.50, and Juliet Winiecki, Eva Mihova, Ella McCalla, and Kara Kochansky qualified with a 3:58.85. Both of these times were season bests by over five seconds.

The Class C Sectional Championship were held last Friday at Valhalla High School. Both Bronxville teams dominated the competition. The boys’ team won with a score of 130 with second place Irvington scoring 82. The girls’ team scored 193 followed by second place Rye Neck with 68 and third-place Briarcliff with 67.
The Bronxville girls had ten first place finishes. Juliet Winiecki took home three individual medals in the 100m hurdles, the 400m hurdles, and the long jump, and the girls’ team also swept the relays. For the boys’ team, Wyatt Gravier won three events: the 100m hurdles, the 400m hurdles, and the high jump.
It is not an easy job coaching the track and field teams as there are over ninety athletes participating. Coach Halling attributes the teams’ successes in part to a slightly different approach to coaching.
“Last season, we underwent a bit of restructuring with our staff by uniting the boys’ and girls’ teams and having the coaches work with specific event groups instead of separate genders,” said Halling. “The results have really begun to shine through as our athletes are so supportive of one another, regardless of event or gender.”

The Bronxville boys’ tennis team captured its second consecutive Sectional Title with a 3-0 win over Edgemont on Thursday at Harrison High School. The top 8 teams in Division 2 (small schools) competed in this tournament, and Bronxville was seeded No. 6.
Bronxville advanced to the Sectional finals by defeating No. 3 Briarcliff 3-2 in the first round and No. 2 Byram Hills 3-2 in the semifinal. In the finals against Edgemont, Rohan Bala and Max Monogenis at first doubles defeated Simon Ascher and Samuel Meyer 6-0, 6-1. The Broncos brought the score to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win by brothers Rhys and Harrison Brown who defeated Harley Pfeffer and Bennett O’Reilly at second doubles. Jackson Fino, who plays second singles for the Broncos, clinched the Sectional Championship with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Henrique Dos Santos Branco.
The team will play Section IX James I. O’Neill in the quarterfinals of the NYSPHSAA D-2 Team Tennis Championship on June 3rd at Harrison High School. The winner of that match will play the winner of Section 2 Glens Falls and Section 3 Cazenovia in the state semifinals.
Go Broncos.
