Opening Reception at OSilas Gallery to Celebrate Eastchester's 350th Year this Thursday, September 4, at 7:00 pm

Sep. 3, 2014:  An opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 4, at Concordia College's OSilas Gallery to kick off an exhibition celebrating 350 years of Eastchester, Tuckahoe, and Bronxville. The reception begins at 7:00 pm.

Curator Mike Fix will introduce the exhibition, titled Legacies, Landmarks & Achievements: Celebrating 350 Years--Eastchester Tuckahoe Bronxville, after which there will be a wine-and-cheese reception. The exhibition is being staged in partnership with the Eastchester's 350th Anniversary Committee.

Visitors will immerse themselves in local history and discover the many individuals and industries that left their legacies here. Over 30 local historical figures from the past 350 years will be highlighted through photos, paintings, personal artifacts, and biographical stories.

Included in the exhibition is a section titled "Tuckahoe Marble Legacies and Landmarks," which will focus on 19th-century personalities who led the development of the marble industry in Tuckahoe and the legacy marble buildings, monuments, and works of art that stand today in the Town of Eastchester and cities traversing the Atlantic Coast. Current color photographs of surviving buildings and monuments by local photographer Lawrence Lee are contrasted with age-old lithographs, drawings, and photographs of those same subjects. Featured will be a bust of John Marshall, on loan from the Boston Athenæum, carved by artist John Frazee out of marble from these very quarries.

Gallery hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday: noon to 5:00 pm; Thursday: noon to 7:00 pm; Saturday and Sunday: 2:00 to 5:00 pm. Local groups and schools are always welcome. To arrange a group visit, please call 914-337-9300, ext. 2262.
