Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, to Speak at Concordia College February 13

Jan. 22, 2014:  His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, will give the 2014 Jacobson Global Lecture at Concordia's Meyer Athletic Center on February 13 at 7:00 pm.

Cardinal Dolan is the archbishop of New York, former president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, a member of the College of Cardinals, and author of the recently published Praying in Rome: Reflections on the Conclave and Electing Pope Francis.

"Pope Francis has captured the world's imagination by shining the light on the Church's compassionate persona rather than the punitive, and generated considerable interest in reexamining the role of faith in the public square," said Dr. Viji George, president of Concordia College. "As a leading voice representing the Catholic Church in America, Cardinal Dolan is eminently qualified and adept at articulating this vision."

Named one of Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World," Cardinal Dolan has been recognized for many of the same qualities he has said he admires in Pope Francis: Sincere, down-to-earth, and focused on the timeless teaching of the Bible, judging actions not people.

Ordained to the priesthood in 1976, Cardinal Dolan served as the auxiliary bishop of St. Louis in 2001 and Milwaukee's 10th archbishop before Pope Benedict XVI named him archbishop of New York in 2009. Cardinal Dolan currently serves on the Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelization and the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

Cardinal Dolan earned his bachelor of arts in philosophy from Cardinal Glennon College and his doctorate in American church history from Catholic University of America, where he is currently a member of the board of trustees.

A scholar of church history and ecumenical theology, Cardinal Dolan and his work in the area of seminary education have influenced the life and ministry of a great number of priests of the new millennium.

The Jacobson Lecture Series is named for the late David Jacobson, former Concordia provost and professor of philosophy, who had a keen interest in world ideologies, religions, history, and politics. The series is a tribute to his profound legacy as a teacher, scholar, minister, and community activist.
