Concordia College Announces New Master of Science Program in Early Childhood Special Education

Jul. 23, 2014:  Concordia College announced the introduction of a new master of science program in early childhood special education, the second master's degree program in special education offered by the college.

The master's degree program in early childhood special education offers two options for interested candidates. For certified teachers, the 34- to 37-credit program leads to a recommendation for New York State certification in early childhood special education, birth to grade 2. For individuals who hold a bachelor's degree in an area other than education, a 46-credit program track leads to a recommendation for New York State dual certification in both general and special education for children, birth to grade 2.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 17% increase in the need for qualified certified special education teachers across all grade levels by 2020. In the early grades and in preschools, the bureau projects a 21% increase in the need for special education teachers. For general education preschool teachers, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 25% increase in the need by 2020.

"We are thrilled to announce this new program, as there is a real need for qualified early childhood teachers," said Dr. Stephanie Squires, director of the master's program at Concordia College. "We are already seeing legislative movement toward universal pre-K and kindergarten programs in the New York City metropolitan area that could extend throughout New York State. Students entering into this program now could be preparing for an emerging need for educators with specialization in early childhood and special education, in particular."

The program features an evening/weekend schedule, small classes, and extensive fieldwork opportunities. Student interaction in local schools may occur as early in the curriculum as their first education class. In addition, students receive an iPad, and all textbooks are loaned through the college's book lending program.
