June 7, 2023: The Broncos head to the New York State Championships this coming weekend and will compete in track and field, girls’ lacrosse, and boys’ team tennis.

Track and Field

At the State Qualifiers held last week, and 26 Bronxville track and field athletes qualified for States with stellar performances. It has been an incredible year for track and field as both the boys’ and girls’ teams won their respective League and Sectional Championships.

It has also been a record-breaking spring for the Broncos. At the Sectional Championships two weeks ago, Danielle Dragoni broke the school record in the 100m dash (12.48), and Max Dicker set a school record in the triple jump (39-11). Two more school records fell at the State Qualifiers as Juliet Winiecki launched an 18-05.25 personal best in the long jump, exceeding the old school record by a foot, and Davis Patterson turned in a time of 50.15 in the 400m dash breaking his own school record in the event.

The performance of the athletes at the State Qualifier meet was exceptional, and the Broncos stepped up and exceeded expectations in every single situation.

“The story of the day was truly the performance of the team, though, as we saw five of our six relay teams advance - a truly exceptional feat,” noted Coach Brian Halling. “In fact, the 26 spots claimed by our team for this weekend's NY State Championship (46 when counting alternates) is the most of any team in Section 1.”

While the girls’ track and field team has been historically strong, the boys’ team has continued to get better and better over the past three years. At the Sectional Championships, the girls were expected to win, but for the boys, it was predicted that the scores for Bronxville, Rye Neck and Irvington would be extremely close. As it turned out, the Bronxville boys easily won the Sectional Championship scoring 149 points with 2nd-place Rye Neck scoring 59 and 3rd-place Irvington scoring 47.5

“We were blown away by just how well the boys performed at the Sectional Championship,” said Coach Halling. “They stepped up in the most important moment of the season. Three years ago, we scored a mere 33 points at this meet and began a rebuilding process. For the team to grow this much in such a short amount of time is a true testament to our seniors and to the commitment our guys have to improving and to supporting one another.”

The Broncos will compete in Division 2 at the New York State Championships, which will be held on Friday and Saturday at Middletown High School.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The girls’ lacrosse team, the defending Class D State Champion, won the Section 1 Championship against Briarcliff (13-3) two weeks ago and headed to regionals this past week. In the first regional contest on May 30th, the Broncos easily defeated Section 2’s Schuylerville (18-4) and then faced Section 9’s O’Neill last Saturday in the regional finals.

The Broncos seemed to get off to a slow start in Saturday’s game and had a narrow 3-2 lead late in the first half. The momentum changed with 2:49 left in the half as Catherine Berkery scored two goals in under one minute and Amy Villanueva added one more to give the Broncos a 6-2 halftime lead. At that point, the Broncos never looked back and won the game 15-4.

Scoring for the Broncos were Catherine Berkery (4G, 2A) and Anna Becker (5G, 1A), who were named co-MVPs. Also scoring were Amy Villanueva (3G), Charlotte Murray (2G, 3A), and Linnea Hentschel (1G). Olivia Shinsato had eight saves.

Bronxville will play Penn Yann in the state semifinals on Friday at Cortland High School. Penn Yan (15-4) defeated Eden in the regional finals. In the other bracket, Cold Spring Harbor will play Skaneateles. Bronxville won the State Championship last year by defeating Skaneateles 15-8. The State Championship game will take place on June 10th at SUNY Cortland.

Golf

Bronxville golfer Greydon O’Keefe placed 15th at the New York State Championship this week shooting a 155 overall.

“I was pretty nervous and teed off in the middle of the pack,” said O’Keefe. “I started well and made some avoidable bogies shooting 81 in wind gusts up to 40 mph, but overall, I was happy with my play.”

In the second round on Monday, the conditions had improved and O’Keefe was able to play well, shooting a 74, which moved him up to a tie for 15th place.

Also competing at states was David O’Shaughnessy who placed 81st with a 173.

“Overall, it was a great experience and a good note to end on for high school golf. Bronxville was the only school to send two golfers which is difficult to do, and it was cool to have my teammate and good friend David O’Shaughnessy there to share the experience,” said O’Keefe.

Go Broncos.
