The Junior League of Bronxville Ensures College-Bound Yonkers Students Have Dorm Room Essentials

July 20, 2022: For the tenth year, the Junior League of Bronxville (JLB) partnered with Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE) to celebrate the accomplishments of Yonkers high school students and provide essential supplies as they embark on their college journeys.

On June 28th, college-bound YPIE students spent the morning at Bed Bath & Beyond in Yonkers shopping for comforters, sheets, towels, desk lamps, and many other items needed when they step foot on the college campus.  

The JLB generously gave each student a $200 gift card and a discount on their entire purchase, and JLB volunteers accompanied students as they shopped, guiding them to select all they may need.

"I really enjoyed meeting other students going to different colleges and having many people there to help you pick out things you really needed," said Yamilex, an incoming freshman at Stony Brook University. "The gift card was a great help because some families don't have a lot of money or resources to buy things. I thank the Junior League of Bronxville for organizing this event.  I saw how all the girls were so happy and excited, and my mom as well, for this amazing opportunity."

The Junior League of Bronxville is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The Dorm Drive is one of many programs JLB has created to meet the most pressing needs in our community.

YPIE partners with students across the Yonkers Public Schools to ensure that hundreds of low-income, but high-promise students are prepared for college success. This year's selected recipients, many the first in their families to attend college, will attend Barnard College, Stony Brook University, Trinity College, University at Albany, and the University of Rochester, among others.

"I enjoyed receiving advice from the volunteers, especially being a first-generation student, whose parents never had a child dorm before," stated Melanie, an incoming college freshman at the University of Rochester. "It felt exciting shopping for this new chapter I am about to begin. I definitely appreciate the Junior League of Bronxville for organizing this event and will be forever grateful to be chosen for this amazing opportunity."

Thanks to the Junior League of Bronxville, these students are even more excited and ready to start their college experience.
