State-of-the-Art Cancer Center and Operating Rooms Open at NYP/Lawrence Hospital PDF Print Email

By Carol P. Bartold

Nov. 2, 2016: NewYork-Presbyterian/Lawrence Hospital has opened its Cancer Care Center on two floors of its new wing, completed in the spring. The state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility occupies the ground and middle floors of the three-story addition to the hospital and has begun to treat patients.

“The goal was to put all the services for oncology patients under one roof,” said Michael Fosina, President of NewYork-Presbyterian/Lawrence Hospital. “We have all services close by for patients, in one place, to increase access to care and to provide convenience.”

Radiation therapy, on the ground floor of the cancer treatment facility, is a new service offered by the hospital. The facility provides space for physician and patient consultations, status checks, and follow-up visits.

Tracey Lewis, Vice President, Operations, explained that the PET/CT simulator is used in both the planning stages for radiation oncology and in diagnostic radiology. PET, or positron emission tomography, is an image test, which allows tumors to be identified and diagnosed at a much earlier stage. “It allows us to understand how the tumor site is responding, not only to radiation, but also to chemotherapy,” Lewis said.

The CT, or computerized tomography scan, uses computer technology to combine x-ray images taken at different angles to provide detailed cross-sectional images of tissue. The PET/CT simulator allows physicians to calculate the dose and frequency of radiation to be delivered and determine the patient’s optimal position for receiving it.

Lewis explained that the PET/CT simulator is used in both the planning stages for radiation oncology and in diagnostic radiology.

Lewis also pointed out with pride that in many institutions, PET is part of the radiology department, which puts it in a location apart from a cancer treatment center. “For us,” she said, “our cancer patients have the advantage of having PET in this single cancer treatment location.”

A linear accelerator, the only one of its kind in Westchester County, operates in a lead-lined vault and delivers external radiation to patients. The external beam can be precisely shaped so that radiation delivered to the tumor does not affect healthy tissue. Respiratory gating equipment monitors the patient’s breathing and its effect on tumor movement during treatment. Radiation is delivered in concert with the patient’s breathing in order to spare healthy tissue.

Oncology patients who require chemotherapy will receive treatment in the new wing’s second floor infusion suite. Designed to facilitate sequential services for patients, the suite includes a small lab for blood work and consultation rooms, as well as an onsite pharmacy for the preparation of prescribed chemotherapy drugs.

The suite provides two private rooms where patients can receive infusion treatments. Patients also have the choice of receiving treatments in semi-private bays or in the more open community room where they can socialize with each other.

“The building was designed to make flow simple for the patient,” Michael Fosina said. “I think it does that.”

Fosina stated that the new surgery suite on the wing’s top floor is scheduled to open the week of November 7. The suite houses six operating rooms designed to accommodate new technology, and a recovery facility.

Hospitals

New York Presbyterian/Lawrence Hospital

In July 2014, Lawrence Hospital and New York-Presbyterian Hospital established a new relationship aimed at enhancing care, improving access and lowering health care costs for residents of Bronxville and surrounding communities in Westchester County. Lawrence was renamed New York-Presbyterian/Lawrence Hospital.

Lawrence Hospital Center was founded in 1909 and is a 291-bed acute care facility with over 1100 employees and 400 physicians. It provides emergency care to approximately 35,000 individuals every year.   It became a designated New York State Stroke Center in 2006.  Its physicians provide expertise in virtually every area of medical specialty and include over 100 primary care physicians. And, Lawrence delivers about 2000 babies every year in the home-like setting of newly designed Labor and Delivery recovery rooms.

Outpatient services include diagnostic testing and laboratory services, ambulatory surgery options, and rehabilitation and sports medicine services. The Hospital has a Women`s Imaging Center where female patients receive diagnostic services in a private setting. Outpatient physical therapy, lymphedema therapy, speech and occupational therapy services are provided both on-site at the Hospital and at Lawrence`s satellite center, The Center for Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, in Scarsdale.

The Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. The Hospital is fully licensed by the New York State Department of Health. Lawrence`s laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists.
