Two Sectional Championships for the Broncos: Girls' Soccer and Field Hockey PDF Print Email

By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer

Nov. 2, 2016:   All four Bronco turf teams entered the sectional playoffs this week, and by yesterday, two Bronxville teams had won sectional titles. The girls’ soccer team won the Class B Championship with a 1-0 win over Albertus Magnus, and the field hockey team defeated Croton, 7-1, winning the Class C title.

On Sunday, the girls’ soccer team played in the sectional final against Albertus Magnus under lights at Yorktown High School. The game got under way after a brief rain delay, and great defense by both teams held the game at 0-0 through regulation time.

“It was very tense,” said goalie Maddie Coyne who had 14 saves in the game. “I think Albertus came out very strong in the first half, and we were just trying to find our ground. I think we were really evenly matched. They played a very strong game.”

During the game, the Broncos had several shots on goal, including three that hit the crossbar, but finally, with less than two minutes left in the second overtime, Mason Warble found the goal on a perfectly placed free kick. Click on the link below to see the kick!

It was a sweet victory for the Broncos, who lost to Albertus last year in the sectional semifinals. The Bronxville girls’ soccer program has had tremendous success over the years, winning six sectional titles in seven years, and two state championships.

Unfortunately, the soccer season came to an end yesterday with a 1-0 loss to a tough Chenango Forks team. In the Class B regional semifinal game, the Bronco girls played well, but the Blue Devil defense was just too good. Chenango Forks, ranked third in the state, has scored 82 goals this season and given up only one.

The Bronco girls’ field hockey team cruised through sectional quarters and semifinals with shutouts against Rye Neck (8-0) and North Salem (4-0) and yesterday defeated Croton in the sectional finals to capture its third consecutive Class C Sectional Championship. In the sectional final, Mia Bettino and Hannah Weirens were the top two scorers, with two goals apiece. The girls will face Section 9’s Rondout Valley in the regional finals on Saturday at Valhalla High School at 1:00 pm.
