March 27, 2024: Spring has arrived with a brilliant display of daffodils by the railroad bridge and a great lineup of Bronxville sporting events. The return of baseball in the spring is a joy to many, and fans can come out to watch the Broncos swinging their bats for their home opener on Monday at 4:30 against Dobbs Ferry.

The Broncos have had an amazing run for the past three years winning three consecutive Class B League Championships and earning the No. 1 Class B ranking. In spite of losing two All-Section and three All-League seniors from 2023, they are poised for another great season.

The team is led by three-year Captain and All-Section catcher Connor Kenny, who will take his talent to Washington and Lee in the fall. Kenny is joined by junior Captains Henry Vail (P/IF/OF), Jack Gangemi (CF/C/IF) and Jack Kennedy (P/3B). This year’s roster promises to have strong pitching, solid defense, and aggressive “small ball” offense.

Opening games took place in Florida, which is an annual spring training destination for the Broncos.

“We are a very athletic team, with coachable, versatile players who have high baseball IQs,” commented Head Coach Michael Schultz.  “I booked eight games with Class A opponents this year, including Rye and Pelham on our Spring Training Trip to Disney/ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Florida. I have no doubt that the boys will rise to the challenge of the tougher competition.”

Playing in the Florida sunshine on Sunday against Class A Pelham, the Broncos lost their season opener, 3-0, but junior ace Henry Vail had a stellar pitching performance giving up 1H and 1ER and striking out 9 in 5 innings. Pelham held the Broncos to three hits (Kenny, Jake Donnelly, and Matthew Walsh) and struck out 10 in 6.1 innings.

Bronxville also suffered a tough 6-3 loss to Class A Rye yesterday.  Starting pitcher Jack Kennedy went 2.2 innings, and reliever Jake Donnelly came in to finish the game, yielding only 2H, 1BB, 1 unearned run and 3 strikeouts over the last 4.1 innings. Contributing to the Bronco offense were Henry Vail (1-4), Jake Donnelly (1-3), and Connor Kenny (1-3). Freshman third baseman Sam Dicker went 2-4 with a triple and one RBI.

Before heading back home, the Broncos will play one more game against Trevor Day in the Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports Stadium. It was not all just about baseball games this week. The Broncos also had time for some team bonding on the Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and later met up with Chewbacca.
