Feb. 14, 2024: The winter season is winding down, and sectional playoffs are taking place this week. The track and field teams competed on Monday and thanks to some pretty stellar performances by Bronxville athletes, both teams won their respective Class C Sectional Championship. The Bronxville boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will play in the first round of playoffs at home this week with the No. 8 Bronco boys playing No. 9 North Salem tomorrow. The girls’ team, ranked No. 7, will face No. 10 Valhalla on Friday. The ski teams will compete in sectionals this week, and seeding for the ice hockey playoffs will take place today.
The indoor track and field teams excelled in the Class C Sectional Championships, which were held at the Armory on Monday night. The girls’ team placed first in six out of 13 events, and the boys’ team took first place in nine of 16.
Kara Kochansky, who had a 2nd place finish at the Westchester County Championships, won the 300m, and Maddy Williams also placed on top in the 1500m. The Bronco girls did well in the 55m hurdles with Colette Ungvary also placing 1st. The team scored well in field events with top three finishes in the high jump, long jump, and triple jump, and a first-place finish for Eva Mihova in the pole vault.
Davis Patterson, Wyatt Gravier, and Kieran McBride led the Bronco scoring with two individual first-place finishes each. Patterson, who runs short distances, won the 300m and the 600m, and Kieran McBride, the Westchester County Champ in the 1600m, placed first in both the 1600m and the 3200m. Gravier, who won the Westchester County title in both the 55m hurdles and the high jump, continued his success at sectionals with a first-place finish in both events.
The relay teams helped push both Bronxville indoor track and field teams to their third Sectional Championship in three years. The boys’ 4x200m, 4x400m, and 4x800m relays placed first, and the girls 4x400m and 4x800m also finished on top.
“What a night,” wrote Coach Brian Halling on X. “So proud of this team as the boys and girls both claim Section 1 titles with a true team effort. Great performances across all events despite graduating so many key pieces from a year ago.”
