Jan. 17, 2024: The Bronxville indoor track and field teams had strong performances on Sunday in their first meet of the year at the Armory. Competing at the Molloy Stanner Games against 129 schools of all sizes, the Broncos placed in the top 20 in nine events, including a first-place finish in the 1600m for junior Kieran McBride.

McBride, coming off a stellar cross country season, finished the 1600m in 4:27.75, beating his best time by seven seconds and setting a new meet record.

“I knew it was going to be a competitive race,” said McBride.  “Everyone went out pretty fast - 31 sec for first 200 - but at that point I was closer to last place. I think with around 200m left, I pulled into first place. If the race hadn’t gone out that quickly, I would not have run the time I did.”

The girls’ and boys’ sophomore SMR (Sprint Medley Relay) performed well with the girls’ relay, Kara Kochansky, Carson Kochansky, Colette Ungvary, Charlotte Murray,  finishing 1st overall, and the boys’ relay, Javier Tomala-Reidel, Hudson Pinon, John Sekula, Will Hogue finishing 4th

“We ran the SMR together for the first time last spring at the New Balance Nationals, but Stanner Games was the first time we ran it together this season,” said Carson Kochansky.

Kara Kochansky gave the team a big lead starting off in the 400m leg.  Carson Kochansky ran 200m in the second leg, and Colette Ungvary ran 200m in the third, keeping the Broncos in first place. Ungvary handed off to Charlotte Murray for the 800m anchor leg, and Murray held onto the lead even when New Rochelle was only a few seconds behind.

“None of us ran our best, but we were all really happy for how we did after coming back from break,” said Carson.  “We are really excited to run together during the New Year and compete in the SMR at other meets,” added twin sister Kara.

Davis Patterson, who finished 12th in the 300m, continued his outstanding career at Bronxville setting another school record with a time of 36.09.  Wyatt Gravier placed 2nd overall in the 55m hurdles with a time of 7.82.

On the girls’ side, Kara Kochansky placed 17th in the 300m in a time of 42.89, and Juliet Winiecki placed 19th with a season’s best time of 43.03.  In the sophomore 55m hurdles, Ungvary placed 5th in 10.15, and Charlotte O’Friel placed 8th in 10.46.

Junior Maddy Williams had a strong showing in the one-mile run. She placed 7th in a season’s best time of 5:21.39.

The boys’ and girls’ teams will compete at the League Championships on Sunday.

“The kids ran great at the Stanner Games, and we definitely look forward to next Sunday's League Championship,” said Coach Brian Halling.  “It's great to be back from the extended break and we're looking forward to seeing how the season progresses.”

Go Broncos.
