Opening Week for Bronxville Indoor Track and Field Teams: Jim Mitchell Invitational

By S.Q. DeJoy and J. Murrer

Dec. 13, 2023: The indoor track and field teams opened the season last week competing in the Section 1 #2 Kickoff Monday and the Jim Mitchell Invitational Saturday. The Mitchell Invitational is a special event for the Bronxville teams as it is named after Bronxville’s legendary track and field coach. The meet was first organized in 2006 when Mitchell was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.

Unlike most track and field meets that span the entire weekend, the Mitchell Invitational is an abbreviated meet that provides early-season competition in a limited number of events.

Forty schools of all sizes from Westchester, Rockland, the Bronx, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, and New Jersey competed in this season-opening event at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory.

“We’ve started off the season with several strong performances,” said Coach Brian Halling. “We’re excited about the direction of the team.  Both teams have seen some real standout performances.”

For the girls’ team, Kara Kochansky ran the 300m in 41.74 placing 2nd in a field of 85 runners, and Eva Milhova placed 15th in 44.46.  In a field of 33 relay teams, the Bronxville girls 4x200m relay, Juliet Winiecki, Kara Kochansky, Carson Kochansky, and Charlotte O’Friel, placed 2nd in 1:50.01 just behind New Rochelle (1:48.24).

The Bronxville girls also performed well in the field events. In the long jump, Juliet Winiecki placed 4th in 15-10.25, and Virginia Hail placed 15th in 13-6.25. In the triple jump Alessa Johnson placed 8th in 29-11.75, and Mihova placed 5th in the pole vault.

The boys 4xx mile relay team, Julian Gonzalez, Jack Toal, Kieran McBride, and Luke Corr, had a very strong showing placing 3rd in the 4xmile in 19:11.95. The 4x200m relay, Davis Patterson, Javier Tomala-Reidel, Gamunu Withana, and Spencer Martin, finished 11th in 1:37.45 in a race that included 42 teams overall. Also running well was Javier Tomala-Reidel, who placed 12th in the 300m in 37.44.

In field events, Matthew McSherry placed 16th in the shot put with a distance of 37-6, and Will Hogue placed 4th in the pole vault.

It was just the first week of competition for the track and field teams, but Coach Halling is very optimistic about the season ahead.

“We're looking forward to seeing how the season progresses, but we know we have a bunch of talent. The kids always work hard and improve despite the weather and colder conditions.”

Go Broncos.
