July 19, 2023: The success of the Bronxville athletic program has translated into increasing numbers of students being recruited to play in college. This year’s college recruits will be competing at schools as near as Columbia and as far as Colorado, but the majority of the recruited athletes will stay in the Northeast.

The twenty-two recruits will play at Division 1 and Division 3 schools in a variety of sports including baseball, crew, football, lacrosse, soccer, squash, swimming and diving, and track and field. This the second year that over 20 Bronxville athletes will be found on college team rosters.

The recruiting process can be arduous for some, but for baseball player Chris Lockwood, it was fairly simple.

“Last summer I went to a showcase at Hobart and played well,” said Lockwood.  “I wanted to balance baseball and my academic needs. Hobart had the major I wanted, so the whole process was pretty easy.”

Lockwood, who will pitch for Hobart’s relatively new baseball team, was 8-1 on the season with a .410 batting average.

Baseball teammate and short stop Ethan Jaquette also went through the baseball recruiting process last summer where he was looking for the right fit between academics, athletics, and social life. He eventually committed to the University of Rochester.

“I had a good summer playing wise,” said Jaquette. “I stayed focused, stayed confident and positive and with that, Rochester came along. We took a visit and I thought the campus was beautiful.  I had heard great things about baseball and knew it was a great academic school.

It seemed I found a good fit.”

Jaquette played shortstop for the baseball team that finished the season with a 19-4-1 record. He batted .468 and had 35 stolen bases.

Catherine Berkery, an All-American lacrosse player who helped lead the Broncos to a State Championship last year, is headed to the University of Pennsylvania. The Berkery family lived and breathed lacrosse this spring as both Catherine and her sister Allie were competing at the highest level of the sport. The Broncos made it to the New York State Championship before falling to Skaneateles in the State Finals, and Allie and her Northwestern teammates won the NCAA Championship with a convincing win over Boston College.

The Clifford family has spent many years traveling to and from squash tournaments. Siblings Ellie and Charlie will join the squash teams at Dartmouth and Middlebury respectively this coming fall.

Ellie and Charlie have been playing together on the squash circuit for many years and at first thought they might like to play at the same school, but ultimately decided on different schools.

“My sister and I decided we wanted to go to different schools since we were together for 12 years at Bronxville. I met the coaches at Middlebury, and I immediately felt I would enjoy my time with them," said Charlie.

Over the years, Ellie and Charlie both had strong US Squash national rankings, were named US Squash Scholar Athletes and All League and were captains of their Bronxville School squash teams. Ellie was also named a US Squash All-American.

After having focused on squash for so many years, Ellie joined the Bronxville School Varsity Field Hockey team at left wing this fall, and Charlie joined the Bronxville School Varsity tennis team at first doubles this spring. Bronxville, the underdog in the playoffs, went on to win the New York State Team Tennis Championship. Charlie and his doubles partner Harrison Brown won a three-set match to clinch the team victory.

Hope Hershberg, who originally ran track as a way to stay in shape for other sports, found herself a three-season runner by senior year. This past spring, Hershberg and her teammates on the 4x800m relay team were given All-State honors. She will be running cross country and track at Colgate in the fall.

“When I was looking at schools, I was really prioritizing academics above athletics, so I had already been looking into applying to Colgate,” said Hershberg. “Just before I went to visit, the coach reached out to me to ask if I was interested in setting up a call. Since I was already going to be on campus, I met with him and toured the facilities. That coincidence felt like a sign that I belonged there. I know that sounds cheesy, but I really think it played a role in my decision.”

All of the Bronxville teams had great success this past year winning League, Sectional, and State Championships but playing on a team is not all about winning.

“I think what made it so special wasn’t just the successes, but my teammates who pushed me and inspired me to be great together,” said Hershberg. “The connections I built as a cross country and track athlete have made me the person I am now both on and off the track.”
