Your Guide to Memorial Day Events and More in Bronxville

Memorial Day logo designed by Bronxville School 5th grader Daniela Gambino

By Staff

May 10, 2023:  Below is information about the Memorial Day logo, parade, Grand Marshal, speech by Mayor Mary Marvin and all sorts of events in Bronxville from May 19 to 29.

Memorial Day Logo

The Memorial Day logo this year (shown above) was designed by Bronxville 5th grader Daniela Gambino.

Daniela has been a student at the Bronxville School since kindergarten.  She has two siblings - a brother in second grade and a sister in college. Her sister in particular has always encouraged her to draw.

Daniela says she has drawn ever since she was able to hold a pencil and "loved it from the very beginning."  Whenever she has free time, she loves to sit at her desk and draw or paint.

In thinking about the design, Daniele wanted to represent the school well and, since the school has excellent sports teams, she drew a Bronxville Bronco surrounded by some popular school sports including lacrosse, tennis, football, field hockey, soccer, and basketball.

In addition to drawing, Daniela enjoys playing many sports including tennis, lacrosse, swimming, soccer, and basketball.

Thank you, Daniela, for sharing your talent with the Bronxville community by creating this amazing Memorial Day logo!

Grand Marshal of the Memorial Day Parade

This year's Grand Marshal of the Bronxville Memorial Day Parade is Richard King.

King worked for St. Joseph’s in Bronxville from 2010-2022 and the Village of Bronxville from 2010 to the present.

He was born on December 7, 1949 in Mount Saint Mitchell, North Carolina, and is the son of James Atlas King (Native American Comanche) and Carol Ann King (Scottish Highlander Kith Kin to McGregor).

King moved to New Rochelle in 1959. He enlisted in the Marines 3rd Force Recon B Co in 1967, was with the 75th Rangers from 1969-1974 and the 5th Group Special Forces from 1976-1989 in Vietnam, Grenada and Panama.

King graduated from North Carolina State University with a BS in Political Science. He had one daughter, Jenna Chyeanne King.

Congratulations to Richard King for being designated Grand Marshal of the Bronxville Memorial Day Parade.

Memorial Day Events

The Bronxville School PTA Memorial Day Committee has organized an amazing list of events. The co-chairs of the Committee this year are Lindsay Lavorgna and Maureen Carey Stapleton.

Stapleton graduated from Bronxville High School in 2002. She is the granddaughter of Hugh Carey, who was a seven-term U.S. representative from 1961 to 1974 and the 51st governor of New York from 1975 to 1982. Governor Carey passed away in 2011 at the age of 92. Stapleton has brothers, nieces, nephews and many cousins, aunts and uncles in the area. Her husband, Ben, also grew up in Bronxville.

Both Lavorgna and Stapleton have children in the Bronxville Elementary School.

They were inspired to chair the event because, as noted by Stapleton, these activities "bring the whole community together with events for all ages to support the village’s school."

In addition to the events organized by the PTA Committee, the village of Bronxville organizes the annual Memorial Day parade and Mayor Mary Marvin gives an annual address honoring veterans of war on the front lawn of the Bronxville School. The Parade is on May 29th at 8:45am. It begins at Leonard Morange Square, which is on the west side of the railroad tracks and continues down Pondfield Road to the front lawn of the Bronxville School.
