Nov. 17, 2022: After being crowned the Section 1 Champion on November 5th, the boys’ cross country team headed to the New York State Championships at Vernon Verona Sherill High School this past weekend and brought home the Class C State Title.

“This has been the most incredible season for our team,” said Coach Jim Agnello.  “From the first mile time trials in early September, I knew we had the athletes to do this. This group was super responsible, mature, and beyond dedicated. I am so proud of each team member, even those that did not compete contributed to the success.”

The Bronxville team scored 78 points for the win with Saranac Lake placing 2nd with 103, James O’Neil 3rd with 109, and Alden 4th with 114.

Scoring for the Bronco were Ellis Goodson (10th, 17:26.10), Kieran McBride (20th, 17:50.70), Andrew Jensen (30th, 18:07.90), Jack Toal (46th, 18:32.00), and JW Henningson (56th, 18:44.40). Also competing were Dallas Agnew (80th, 19:17.70) and Will Hogue (95th, 19:43.50). There were 131 runners in the Class C race.

“It was unlike any race I have ever run,” said sophomore Kieran McBride, who finished second for Bronxville.  “Honestly, I think I ran the race pretty smart.  I didn’t try to blow it up because I knew what my position had to be. I guess the adrenaline kicked in because I didn’t feel a lot of pain until the last 800meters.”

Seven Bronxville runners competed at States, but only the top five count in scoring. The team had been struggling to close the gap between the 1st and 5th finisher all season as closing the gap was key to winning a state title.

“The five-depth had been lacking all season,” said McBride, “but Jack Toal stepped up in the final race made the gap.”

During the season, the team was at practice daily, never questioned or complained about the difficult back hills workouts at Van Cortlandt Park, and always appreciated a piece of Lloyd’s carrot cake after each Van Cortlandt practice.

“I believe this is our magic elixir,” joked Agnello.

The cross country team’s biggest competitor in Section 1 this season was Briarcliff. The Broncos and Bears were neck and neck during the regular season, but the Broncos easily defeated Briarcliff in the Sectional Championship.

"After winning sectionals, the team asked me about winning states,” said Coach Agnello.  “I replied, ‘Yes, we are going to win.’”

The Broncos challenged Coach Agnello asking if he would cut off his long hair if they won States. Agnello said a firm yes, then followed through by cutting off three years of growth and donating it the day after the State Championship win.

After a season of hard work, the Broncos were proud to have won the New York State Championship for the first time in Bronxville history. When they returned home on Saturday after their race, they were welcomed by a double police escort and their fans, including the remainder of the team, parents, and other students with signs and balloons. The true meaning of a community was on display.

“We will miss our graduating seniors and wish all the athletes a great winter track season,” said Coach Agnello.  “Sincere thanks for the cross country parents who have been beyond supportive. I hope the athletes learn that hard work pays off and every detail counts.”

The girls’ cross country team lost to Pleasantville by one point in the Sectional Championship missing a chance to compete at States. Sophomore Lux Burgin qualified for the State Championships as an individual and placed 7th in a time of 19:55.3. There were 129 runners competing in the Class C race.

Go Broncos.
