Nov. 23, 2022: The Bronxville School Board of Education met on November 17.  Board Chair, Susan Conniff, opened the meeting by thanking the Board members for their commitment, congratulating the school’s educators on the school’s number 1 ranking in New York state on proficiency in Math and ELA, and congratulating the Bronxville boys’ cross-country team on becoming State Champions.

She then said that the search for the new Superintendent to replace Dr. Montesano, who is retiring in the spring, is well underway. The Board will interview candidates in December and expects to have the process completed by mid-January.

Assistant Superintendent for Business, Dan Carlin, introduced an external auditor who reviewed key aspects of the audit with the Board. The auditor noted that the school had an “unmodified audit” but that there was one “significant deficiency.”  Carlin said that the deficiency was related to the reconciliation of the multi-fund account. Carlin said that the old financial system used to do the reconciliation but the new financial does not.  He said that the corrective action taken will be for “each fund to have its own account.”  There will be a follow-up in next year’s audit.

Conniff then reviewed a communications survey recently undertaken by the Board.  Below are a few of the action items:

-The Board is working to improve the website so that there is more easily available information on the site.

-The Board meetings are currently being live-streamed, and they have now added a public comment section so people viewing the stream can participate in the meeting.

-The Board is working on increasing the frequency of communication.  They now send out email updates and post written summaries of the Board meetings on the school’s website.

Dr. Montesano talked about the Elementary School being named a Blue Ribbon School and recognized the success of a number of the fall sports teams and individuals. Rob Cross, Bronxville High School English teacher, talked about the success of the fall play.

Shea Lewis, the student representative to the Board, congratulated the participants in the fall play and sports.  She said that there had been a lot of student involvement in the school this fall. She noted that among the upcoming activities are a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, as well as music recitals and sports awards.

Dan Carlin reviewed the school’s financials.  He said that the school is seeing inflationary increases in some expense areas including transportation and energy; however, these increases are being offset by significantly higher interest income than budgeted.  He also said the school pumps worked perfectly during the recent rainstorm.
