Oct. 26, 2022: The Broncos are in the midst of playoffs and while some teams have already finished up, the boys’ soccer and the girls’ field hockey teams are continuing on to the Sectional semifinals on Thursday with afternoon home games. The Class B football team will play its first post-season game on Friday evening. Also competing this week is the swim and dive team who will participate in Sectionals on Saturday. The cross country teams have two big meets coming up: the Westchester County Championship on the 29th and the Section 1 Championship on November 5th.

Field Hockey

The 8-5-3 field hockey team is seeded No. 4 in the Class C playoffs. The Broncos played a tough regular season schedule, which included games against Mamaroneck and Scarsdale, the top-ranked teams in Class A. In the quarterfinals against No. 5 Irvington on Monday, the Broncos outscored and outlasted Irvington with a 3-0 win. Scoring for the Broncos were sisters Izzy and Emma Yeon.

“Our skill, speed and stamina proved a winner today,” said Coach Jacquelyn Frawley.  “We had two key defenders return this past week, and we are thrilled to have them back out there with the team. Isabela Fenner worked tirelessly to make plays happen, and freshman Izzy Yeon had two beautiful goals off offensive corner shots.”

The field hockey team will play against No. 9 Rye Neck (4-8-6) tomorrow in the semifinals. Rye Neck upset No. 1 North Salem on Monday 1-0 in overtime. The Broncos defeated Rye Neck 2-0 in early September.

If successful in the semis, the Broncos will play in the Class C Section 1 Championship on Saturday at Lakeland High School against the winner of No. 2 Putnam Valley/No. 3 Hastings.

Boys’ Soccer

The boys’ soccer team finished the regular season with a 14-1-1 record and is seeded No. 2 in Class B behind Briarcliff.

In the opening round against Westlake on Saturday, neither team scored in the first half, but the floodgates opened for Bronxville in the second half. Miles Courtney had a hat trick with two of those goals scored in the first minutes of the second half, and Charlie Hodlike and Sebastian Wortel each added one. Will Redman had two assists, and Chris Houves, Derek Bilyeu, and Valentino Quieti each had one assist.

The Broncos advance to the semifinals tomorrow after defeating No. 7 Rye Neck 1-0 in the quarterfinals yesterday. They will play at home on Chambers Field at 2:30 against No. 6 Byram Hills.

If the Broncos are successful, they will play in the Class B Section 1 Championship at Lakeland on Sunday against the winner of No. 1 Briarcliff/No. 12 Valhalla.

Football

The Broncos lost to Pearl River in their final home game of the regular season. Bronxville scored in the first minutes of the game, but the Pirates answered back twice in the first half and ended up winning the game 15-8.

Bronxville is ranked No. 6 in the Class B playoffs and will play at No. 3 Nanuet on Friday at 6:30.

The Broncos 1-7 record does not accurately characterize the team’s regular season. In six of their eight games, the Broncos lost by a touchdown or less including an overtime 21-14 loss to No. 1 and Class B Defending State Champion Pleasantville and a 28-27 loss to No. 4 Ardsley. The Broncos lost to Nanuet 22-14 in their second game of the season.

Cross Country

The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams won their respective League Championship last weekend and head to the Section 1 Championships on November 5th.

The boys’ team scored 26 points for the win and was followed by Irvington with 42 and Hastings with 98. Bronxville’s top five finishers were Ellis Goodson (1st, 15:52.5), Kieran McBride (3rd, 15:54.7), Andrew Jensen (5th, 15:19.1), J.W. Henningson (6th, 16:26.5), and Jack Toal (11th, 16:52.2).

The girls’ team also won the League Championship with 26 points followed by Hastings with 60 and Irvington with 77. Lux Burgin placed first in a time of 18.12.2 and was followed by Maddy Williams (3rd, 18:21.2), Katie O’Hare (6th, 19:10.5), Meghan Curran (7th, 19:16.1), and Quinn Sheehan (9th, 19:30.3).

Swimming and Diving

The Swim and Dive Sectional Championships will take place at Purchase College on Saturday at 1PM. Senior diver Kayla Tartarian has already qualified for the State Championship, which will be held on November 6th.

Girls’ Soccer

The girls’ soccer team (4-10-3), seeded No. 12 in the Class B playoffs, lost to No. 5 Briarcliff 1-0 in overtime in the first round to end their fall season.

Go Broncos.
