May 25, 2022: The Junior League of Bronxville (JLB) held a Service & Scholarship Celebration on April 28th in honor of the ten community organizations and four young women who were recipients of JLB Grants and Scholarships in 2022.

The JLB Community Grants Program partners with 501(c)(3) organizations benefiting the JLB’s service area of Bronxville, Eastchester, Mount Vernon, Tuckahoe and Yonkers.  The grants meet immediate and specific needs within those communities.

This year, the JLB provided funding for the following organizations and projects:

Bronxville Ballet Not For Sale (children’s ballet classes held at the Westhab’s DaySpring community building in Yonkers)

Bundles of Joy (period product care packages to be distributed to women in need)

Cancer Support Team (grocery gift cards for individuals in need who are battling cancer)

The Counseling Center (mental health awareness social media campaign)

Eastchester Community Action Partnership (ECAP) (renovation of afterschool program area)

Eastchester Volunteer Ambulance Corps (EVAC) (EMT recruitment video)

The Guidance Center of Westchester (creation of a student study lounge)

We Run Mt. Vernon (t-shirts for community Turkey Trot run)

Westchester Disabled on the Move (smart speakers to increase independence for individuals with disabilities)

Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE) (photoshop tablet subscriptions for high school students studying digital design).

The JLB also awarded four scholarships to talented and deserving women:

These scholarships are awarded to college-bound young women in their senior year of high school, who have demonstrated a strong commitment to volunteerism in their community, among other criteria.

The 2022 Positive Power Scholarship was awarded to Genna Handel from Eastchester High School, who will attend Cornell University in the fall.

The Cara Kealy Scholarship memorializes a former Junior League member who valiantly fought against breast cancer.  It was awarded to Ava Tspatsaris, also from Eastchester High School, who will attend New York University.

The Erica Sevilla Service Award honors the legacy of past Junior League President, Erica Sevilla, who also sadly passed away from breast cancer.  This year’s awardees are Nicole Valdez Romero from Yonkers Middle-High School, who will attend Iona College in the fall, and Annly John from Lincoln High School in Yonkers, who will attend Lehigh University.

Together with JLB President Danielle Spring, Erica’s daughter, Avery Sevilla, presented the Erica Sevilla Service Awards this year.  Erica’s husband, Nathan Sevilla, was also there to celebrate the accomplishments of the awardees.
