April 27, 2022: The Broncos continued with a busy schedule last week, and despite a couple of losses, the teams hold on to some pretty impressive rankings.

The girls’ lacrosse team is the number one-ranked team in all of Section 1 and the top-ranked Class D team in the state. Yesterday, the Bronco girls were recognized nationally, appearing on the Inside Lacrosse Magazine’s Top 25 National Rankings at No. 14.  It is the first time the girls’ team has appeared on that elite list.

The boys’ lacrosse team is ranked No. 2 in Class D, ranked No. 5 in LoHud’s Power Rankings, and is also ranked No. 6 in the state by the New York State Sportswriters’ Association. Three of the top six Class D teams in the state all come from Section 1: Pleasantville, Briarcliff and Bronxville.

The baseball team, with six wins and one loss in the last eight days, sits at the top of Class B. It is the second year in a row that the baseball team has achieved the No. 1 ranking, and only the second time ever for the baseball program.

Bronxville players have been frequently recognized by Lohud as nominees for Player of the Week. This past week, all three teams had a top contender, including lacrosse players Olivia Shinsato and Tommy Garofalo and baseball player Peter Coquillette.  Goalie Shinsato had 24 saves last week in the Broncos’ three wins against Carmel, Suffern, and Long Island’s Eastport South Manor, and attackman Garofalo scored 7G and 3A in the win over Putnam Valley and 3G and 2A in the loss to Mamaroneck. Center fielder Coquillette had a big week for the Broncos batting .579 with 2 doubles, 8 RBI, 10 runs scored and 2 stolen bases in the last six games.

All three team faced some top competition this past week. Below is a look at how they fared.

The girls’ team faced Suffern on Friday night under lights at Haindl Field. In this much anticipated game between the top two teams in all of Section 1, the Broncos took a commanding 6-0 lead over the Mounties and never looked back winning 16-7. Bridget Finley scored first for the Broncos and added one more later in the game. Catherine Berkery scored four times, Molly Krestinski and Carolina Ircha each scored three, and.  Kiki Tormey and Megan Krestinski each had two.

The Broncos had their 9th win of the season on Sunday with an 11-7 victory over Long Island’s Eastport South Manor.  Bronxville’s only loss this season has been to New Canaan, a top-ranked program in Connecticut.

The team will face Pleasantville and Mamaroneck away later this week, and they return home on Monday to play Rye.

Playing in the drizzling rain yesterday, junior Chris Lockwood pitched a one- run complete game to give the Broncos a 2-1 victory over league rival Dobbs Ferry.  The 7-4 Eagles had a chance in the bottom of the 7th with a lead-off double, but Lockwood was able to close out the inning for the win.

“It felt good to pitch my first complete 7-inning game,” said Lockwood. “My pitch count stayed low due to incredible defense behind me. The rain definitely makes it a little more difficult, but hearing everyone cheer me on as we were trying to get the outs helped a lot.”

In the win over the Eagles, freshman Jack Gangemi drove in Jeremy Freeman on a sac fly in the bottom of the 4th to tie the game, and junior Jamie Valdez scored on a sac fly from Ethan Jaquette for the go-ahead run.

Last week, the Broncos faced a competitive Albertus Magnus team coming out with a 7-6 win on Wednesday and an 8-1 loss on Friday.  In the win against Albertus, Lockwood earned the win allowing four earned runs on six hits. He is 5-0 on the season. Ethan Jaquette (2 RBI), Peter Coquillette (1 RBI), and Jeremy Freeman (1 RBI) contributed to the scoring.

The Broncos head to Dobbs Ferry on Thursday for a rematch and return home on Saturday to take on Irvington at 11:00AM.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The boys’ lacrosse team played a home game against Pelham yesterday winning the game by one. The Broncos had a 6-3 lead until the fourth quarter, but the Pelicans scored two in the fourth to close the gap. Pelham had a chance to score in the last seconds of the game, but Bronxville’s defense shut them down.

The Broncos lost to Section 1’s top seed Mamaroneck at home last Thursday. In the game against the Tigers, Garofalo scored three goals, Luke Sheehan scored two and Luke Stephens, Sean McGrath, and Benjamin Atkeson scored one each.

The 7-3 Broncos will play Friday at home against Westlake and then will travel to Rye on Saturday.

Go Broncos.
