By Scott Goodson, Bronxville resident
April 20, 2022: Yulia Gerbut and her sons Max and Nikita are arriving in Bronxville April 29 to spend time with Ellis, Karin and me.
Yulia and her sons recently arrived in the US after being uprooted from their home outside Kyiv, a stone's throw from Bucha. As she fled towards the Polish border, her heart was breaking. Her two sons, 11-year-old Nikita and 14-year-old Max, were in the car with her. But she was leaving her youngest son, Martin, behind. She was unable to bring him with her: "The grave of my son is left there." Martin died from cancer in 2019. He was 4 years old.
As Yulia watched the horrors of the war unfold, and bombs falling on her home outside Kyiv, she feared the next Russian bomb could fall on her son's resting place. She had witnessed explosions from her bedroom window and a Russian helicopter shooting flares as she stood in her kitchen. In her heart, she knew the attacks were not stopping.
Yulia's story was broadcast across the US and around the world on CNN. She lost everything when she fled Ukraine; yet fortunately made it to the United States, and will visit Bronxville at the end of April.
All donations will go directly to her to help her while she awaits a visa enabling her to work in the US, which will take time to obtain. Once the war is over she wishes to return to her home, and to Martin.
