April 6, 2022: It is a sure sign of spring when baseball returns to Scout Field. The Broncos opened last Wednesday with a 13-1 win over Blind Brook, and then battled Pleasantville in an exciting home opener. In last Thursday’s game against the Panthers, neither team was able to score until the bottom of the ninth when Bronxville senior Andy Holub stepped up to the plate and delivered a walk-off homerun for the 1-0 win. Holub, an All-Section and All-League honoree last year, went 3 for 5 including the homerun and a double. Pitchers Ted Heraty and Ethan Jacquette combined for nine shutout innings.

The Bronxville baseball team is led by captains Peter Coquillette (Sr.), Chris Lockwood (Jr.), Ted Heraty (Jr.), and Connor Kenny (So.). These four captains and a core of solid players return this year after making it all the way to the Class B Sectional Finals last season before losing 6-2 to Rye Neck. For their success in 2021, Coquillette was named All-Section honorable mention and All-League, and Lockwood, Heraty, Kenny, and junior Jeremy Freeman were given All-League recognition.

In a rematch of last year’s Class B Championship game, the Broncos faced Rye Neck on Saturday. Freshman Henry Vail held the Panthers scoreless for four innings. Rye Neck was down 5-2 in the bottom of the 7th but scored four runs to win 6-5 on a walk-off single. For Bronxville, Lockwood had 2RBIs, and freshman Jack Gangemi, Coquillette, and Freeman had one RBI each.

The Broncos took the field again on Monday to face Valhalla. They improved their record to 3-1 with a 10-4 win behind a strong pitching performance by Lockwood (6IP, 2ER, 6H, 9SO, 2BB). Lockwood improved to 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA and was supported by an errorless defense. Holub, who plays shortstop, was 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs in the Valhalla game and leads the offense with a .719 average and a 2.193 OPS.

The Broncos will play 20 plus games before the end of the regular season. Their league includes Hastings, Albertus Magnus, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, and Edgemont.

Go Broncos.
