March 23, 2022: David M. Rubenstein, the leading United States’ Patriotic Philanthropist and a New York Times Best-Selling author, will present the 23rd Brendan Gill Lecture on April 29th at 8:00 p.m., at the Barbara Walters Campus Center at Sarah Lawrence College.
An original signer of The Giving Pledge, Rubenstein has promised to dedicate the majority of his wealth to charitable causes, much of which is related to American history. Some of his transformative gifts include: the restoration or repair of the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Monticello, Montpelier, Mount Vernon, Arlington House, Iwo Jima Memorial, the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian, The National Archives, the National Zoo, the Library of Congress, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. He has also provided long term loans of his rare copies of the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Emancipation Proclamation, the 13th Amendment, the first map of the U.S., and the first book printed in the United States.
Rubenstein has published three books, including the New York Times best sellers The American Story, The American Experiment, and How To Lead. He is the host of The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations on Bloomberg TV and PBS, and Bloomberg Wealth with David Rubenstein on Bloomberg TV. Rubenstein’s writing explores the inspiring story of America as a grand experiment in democracy, culture, innovation, and ideas. Drawing on the research of and interviews with the country’s leading historians, diplomats, musicians, and other cultural leaders, he brings to life the American spirit, revealing the successes, setbacks, suffering, ingenuity, and social movements that continue to shape our vision of what America is -- and what it can be.
Rubenstein serves on numerous national boards and is the Co-Founder and Co-Chair of The Carlyle Group, one of the world’s largest and most successful private investment firms. Established in 1987, Carlyle now manages $301 billion from 26 offices around the world.
The Bronxville Historical Conservancy presents the Brendan Gill Lecture each year as a gift to the community. The lecture is named for former Bronxville resident, editor, and writer, Brendan Gill, who was a champion of architectural preservation and other visual arts.
