Dec. 22, 2021: Bronxville High School senior Olivia Cevasco has received a national honorable mention award in writing for her screenplay “First Lady Astronauts” in the prestigious 2022 YoungArts competition.

Her screenplay is based on the story of 13 female aviators, nicknamed the “Mercury 13,” who successfully passed NASA’s astronaut tests in the early 1960s but were ultimately not accepted as astronauts because of their gender. Cevasco, whose work stood out among thousands of entries, is among 720 of the most accomplished young visual, literary and performing artists from across the country to receive the recognition. Winners are chosen for their caliber of artistic achievement by esteemed discipline-specific panels of artists through a rigorous blind adjudication process.

In addition to monetary awards, all winners receive a medallion, creative and professional development support and access to an online portal for YoungArts artists to connect, share their work and discover new opportunities.

Cevasco has previously won a national Silver Medal for her screenplay in the 2021 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.
