Sept. 8, 2021: The Bronxville School opens tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 9, but not without some challenges.
Last week, on Sept. 1, Hurricane Ida swept through Bronxville with torrential rain and wind. While all five of the School's flood mitigation pumps were activated throughout the night and morning, portions of the building and fields sustained flood damage.
According to a communication by Bronxville School Superintendent Roy Montesano, parts of the first floor "received up to eight inches of water." He further stated that if the School had not had the flood mitigation pumps operating, "we most likely would have experienced far more significant flooding with estimates of up to six feet of water in the building."
The School hired an outside firm to remove water, clean and sanitize the areas that sustained flooding. They also hired an industrial hygienist to monitor the cleanup and test areas to ensure they are safe for staff and students.
While the first floors of the A & B wings of the School won't be ready for occupation until September 13, the School created a plan for an opening for all students tomorrow.
Chambers and Hayes fields are also not yet ready for use, but the School expects them to be ready within a week. The School sustained damage to the Blue Gym and Main Gym, and both will need to have their floors replaced. The gyms will take some time to be ready. The playground is ready for use.
