Mar. 3, 2021: The winter season finished up last week for the Bronxville ski teams, and the girls’ basketball team, which did not start until February 23rd, will finish the regular season this week.

The Bronco ski teams, who competed at Thunder Ridge Ski Area in Patterson, had great seasons given all the different variables they had to deal with. While it was great to have a ski season in the midst of the pandemic, the number of teams practicing at any given time was restricted, and the number of competitions was limited.

The other challenge that the ski team faces every year is snow. They need enough snow to ski, but not so much that there are school closings and canceled meets. Luckily, February was one of the snowiest in recent years, and the team was able to stay on track and finish strong.

The girls’ team won the League Title in the Southern Division. At the League Championship race, Lucy Sevin came in 5th place in a time of 28.74, followed by her sister Annie in 7th place (29.90) and Brooke Thompson in 11th place (31.79). Captain Alanna Thompson, Monola Mota-Rodembush, and Audrey Spiegel were also members of the winning team.

Schools included in the Southern Division are Ardsley/Dobbs Ferry, Clarkstown North/Clarkstown South/Nyack, Edgemont, North Rockland, Sleepy Hollow, and Suffern.

Eighth-graders Lucy and Annie Sevin qualified for the 2021 Section 1 Slalom Open Championship and finished 14th and 20th, respectively. Brooke Thompson qualified as an alternate. There are no state championships this year, as they were canceled before the season started.

The boys’ team was led by Captain Paul Hodulik. Top skier Ray Thompson finished 10th at Leagues with a time of 38.92, earning him an alternate spot for the Slalom Open Championship race.

The girls’ basketball team opened the season with a 47-32 win over Rye Neck. The Broncos celebrated Senior Night before the game, recognizing Senior Captains Stella Daskalakis and Skyler Martin along with seniors Jane Becker and Lyndsie Schultz. While fans are not allowed to attend this year, each senior was allowed two guests.

The team is about one week into the shortened basketball season and has three wins and one loss. In addition to the win over Rye Neck, the girls’ defeated Horace Greeley 39-32 and Tuckahoe 36-28. The only loss so far was to Irvington, where the Broncos lost 44-38. Class B Irvington has won five state championships in the past ten years.

Top scorers for the Broncos include Skyler Martin, Kiki Tormey, Ashley Wetty, and Catherine Berkery.

The Bronco girls will play three more games against Dobbs Ferry, Blind Brook, and Westlake before the regional playoffs begin next week. The Broncos play in the Southern Westchester Region Group 3, which consists of Bronxville, Hastings, Irvington, Pleasantville, Rye Neck, Valhalla, and Westlake. Seeding for the regional playoffs should take place early next week.

Go Broncos.
