Sep. 30, 2020: For the past couple of years, the Bronxville School has been undergoing a $28.3 million capital improvement project primarily financed by two bond issues.

Phase 1 of the capital improvements was completed in September of 2019 and included the following:

-new turf on Chambers Field,

-a new track subsequently named the James Owen Mitchell Track after Bronxville's renowned track coach,

-an updated Elementary School playground,

-flood mitigation pumps and a new storm drain needed to alleviate flooding around the school, and

-the replacement of ceiling tiles in the Elementary School playroom.

The school is currently in the final stages of Phase 2 of the Capital Improvement program. Dan Carlin, Assistant Superintendent for Business, expects Phase 2 to be completed by year-end.

Phase 2 includes the cafeteria's expansion, which is completed and currently in use by middle school students for lunch. It is more than double the old cafeteria's size and includes a new serving area, new seating options, and large skylights.

Currently, students sit with one open seat between them to enable social distancing.

Below are some photos of the new cafeteria.

Phase 2 also includes modern classroom space on the third floor above the Blue Gym (pictured below).

As part of Phase 2, the school has replaced the "curtain wall" on the Elementary School building with brick to match the rest of the building's exterior.

The school is awaiting the arrival of new windows, which were delayed in the manufacturing process due to COVID-19. The building currently has temporary windows in place so that the Elementary School children can use the classrooms.

Below is a picture of part of the new wall with the temporary windows.

One project nearly completed under Phase 2 is an Innovation Center (pictured below), located in an old boiler room. The Innovation Center will be a space for robotics, 3D design and printing, and other innovative projects.

Another project that is progressing nicely is a new Health Suite that is significantly larger than the existing Health Office and includes several individual rooms for sick students and an isolation room. Part of the Health Suite is pictured below.alt

The school will also have a new large Guidance Wing adjacent to the new High School lobby (pictured below). This area will include offices for the Guidance Counselors and enough room to host visitors from colleges.

A final important project is the new expanded High School lobby on the Meadow Avenue side, which will have a lounge area and a security area with a "man trap," where people entering the building can be isolated and vetted before being granted entrance.

Below is a photo of the current construction on the Meadow Avenue entrance.

The school also installed HVAC in a large portion of the building. The entire building is now air-conditioned either with the new HVAC or with window units in some classrooms.

There were several maintenance projects in Phase 2 as well. For example, the main entrance to the school was in disrepair and was reconstructed. There were also roof replacements in some areas, brick repointing, and lintel repairs.

In addition to the Capital Improvement Projects, the school has also been outfitted with equipment needed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Below are pictures of new equipment and signs being used.
